Scotland will be first part of UK to legalize same-sex marriage. UPDATE: Full reactions from LGBT campaigners, faith leaders and politicians

Scotland has confirmed it will legalize gay marriage, becoming the first part of the UK to do so.

A bill on the issue will be brought forward in the country's parliament this September.

Today’s decision (25 July) comes after cabinet members of the Scottish National Party (SNP) government met earlier this month to discuss the measures.

Despite widespread support for a change in the law, there has been fierce opposition from some religious leaders and clerics.

Cardinal Keith O'Brien demands the Scottish government holds a referendum on same-sex marriage 

Britain’s most senior Catholic demanded a referendum on same-sex marriage in a last-minute intervention on the eve of a final decision by the Scottish government.

Cardinal Keith O’Brien’s intercession comes ahead of the Scottish National Party (SNP) cabinet meeting tomorrow (17 July) to decide whether to introduce a same-sex marriage bill to the Scottish Parliament.

Scotland for Marriage poll appears to suggest that over half of Scots oppose same-sex marriage, equality campaigners point flaws and bias 

A poll published Tuesday (10 July) and conducted by ComRes on behalf of the religious anti-gay campaign group Scotland for Marriage, appears to suggest most Scots oppose same-sex marriage.

The poll states that 55% of Scots agreed with the statement: ‘Marriage should continue to be defined as a life-long exclusive commitment between a man and a woman’ and that 50% of Scots want a referendum on the question of same-sex marriage.

Homophobic bullying ‘a daily nightmare’ for over half of Scotland’s school pupils, while a quarter of young gay Scots attempt suicide

New research has found that 52% of lesbian, gay and bisexual pupils in Scottish secondary schools experience homophobic bullying.

The findings in Stonewall Scotland’s School Report Scotland 2012, carried out by the University of Cambridge, are specific to the 158 lesbian, gay and bisexual young Scots who took part in a national survey of 1,614 young people.

Major poll reveals homophobia and transphobia widespread in Scotland but a majority of Scots support same-sex marriage

A poll of 1,968 people conducted by YouGov for Stonewall Scotland has revealed that three in five people believe that lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender Scots face public prejudice in Scotland today.

But more than four in five in Scotland say it’s right to tackle that prejudice.

Stonewall Scotland recognizes banking giant Barclays and others as the best employers for lesbian, gay and bisexual staff

Scotland’s most gay-friendly employers picked up awards for their hard work last night from leading gay campaign group Stonewall.

As GSN reported yesterday (9 February) seven employers in Scotland were recognized for making it into the Stonewall Workplace Equality Index top 100.

Any employer can enter the index which assesses a range of key indicators including a staff satisfaction survey of over 7,500 lesbian, gay and bisexual employees.

Seven Scottish employers break into British top 100 of Stonewall's workplace index

Banking firm Barclays will receive an award tonight as the Top Employer in Scotland for lesbian, gay and bisexual staff.

The award comes from Stonewall, Britain’s leading lesbian, gay and bisexual rights campaign as is based on Barclays being the highest placed Scottish employer on Stonewall’s top 100 Workplace Equality Index which was released last month.
