A man has been charged with assaulting Liberal Democrat John Morrison while he was walking home after a Christmas night out

The gay former leader of a local council in Scotland has died after being assaulted in Glasgow city center in the early hours of Saturday (22 December).

John Morrison, 50, was attacked while on his way home to Milngavie, where he lived with his partner, after a Christmas night out.

A man has appeared in court charged with assaulting him.

The former Liberal Democrat leader of East Dunbartonshire Council from 2003 to 2007 was found on Argyle Street at 12.40am.

He was taken to Glasgow Royal Infirmary for treatment but died there.

Scotland's pioneering and only LGBT dedicated counselling service is to close after 35 years of service due to funding cuts

The Strathclyde Gay and Lesbian Switchboard (SGLS) which was set up on Union Street, Glasgow, in 1977, will shut on Scotland’s Hogmanay (New Years Day).

The charity said its major contributor, NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde, cut funding two years ago leaving SGLS surviving on savings since.

Another health board recently also scrapped its funding.

The service provides information, advice, arranges support meetings and one-to-one communication for the region's LGBT community.

Derek Riordan, former player for Scotland's national football team, hurled homophobic abuse at nightclub staff in Edinburgh

Scottish footballer Derek Riordan has been fined £800 for hurling homophobic abuse at nightclub bouncers in Edinburgh.

The Bristol Rovers forward was found to have shouted 'poofs' at the staff of the Picture House, as he was thrown out of the Lothian Road night spot on 7 May.

The 29-year-old, who captained Scotland's national football team three times, pleaded guilty to breaching the peace at a hearing in the capital's sheriff court.
