Encounters gay character of Kevin Keller at Science Fiction convention

George Takei, the openly gay actor who came to fame as Sulu in the original Star Trek television series, appears as himself in the just-released issue #6 issue of Archie Comics.

Takei encounters Kevin Keller at a science fiction convention. Keller is the first gay character in the history and married in issue #16 of Life With Archie.

Former Eagle Scout George Takei, best known as Sulu from the original Star Trek TV series, spoke out Wednesday (18 July) against the Boy Scouts of America's announcement this week that they will continue to ban openly gay people.

Takei, who rode in last month's New York City LGBT Pride Parade wearing his Scout uniform, called the anti-gay position an 'ugly blemish' on an organization he 'revered' as a teenager.

The fact that gays are not allowed to participate in the Boy Scouts of America didn't stop one of the most famous gay men in the US from wearing his Scouts uniform in the New York City Pride Parade on Sunday.

George Takei, best known as Sulu on the original Star Trek television series and first batch of feature films, road on the back of a red convertible with Jennifer Tyrrell who was has emerged as the face of the fight against the Scout's anti-gay policy.

Star Trek icon is a former Boy Scout: 'Some of my best memories from my boyhood are of my scouting days'

Long before he became known as Sulu on the Star Trek television series and later feature films, George Takei was a member of Boy Scouts of America.

Now one of the most famous gay men in the world, Takei will be wearing a scouts uniform this Sunday when he joins Jennifer Tyrrell for the New York City Pride March. Tyrrell is the lesbian mom ousted as the den leader of her seven-year-old son’s troop in Ohio because of her sexual orientation.

Star Trek icon George Takei usually uses his celebrity to speak out for LGBT equality.

But the openly gay star who gained fame as Mr. Sulu, helmsman of the USS Enterprise, has just filmed a YouTube video spot for another cause: brokering peace between ever-divided Star Trek and Star Wars camps.
