21 European countries have laws such as this including France, Italy and Turkey

The European Court of Human Rights has ruled a law requiring trans people be permanently infertile before they undergo treatment is incompatible with human rights.

The judges in Strasbourg made the judgment after a transgender man, 'YY', in Turkey was told he would have to be sterile if he wished to undergo gender reassignment surgery in 2005.

Three years later, he turned to the ECHR saying his right to respect for privacy and a family life was violated by Turkey's 'absurd' laws.

The film is the true tale of one of the first people to undergo gender reassignment surgery – and what happened to her

The first picture of Eddie Redmayne playing transgender pioneer Lili Elbe has been unveiled. 

Redmayne, who just won an Oscar for his role as Stephen Hawking in The Theory of Everything, will play Elbe in forthcoming drama, The Danish Girl. 

The film, set in the 1920s, tells the story of a painter named Wegener, who was persuaded by her wife, also a painter, to pose in women's clothing for her. 

This opened up a whole new world for Wegener, who later began her male-to-female transition and changed her name to Lili Elbe.

Supreme Court rules in favor of two non-operative transgender women

Transgender Israelis are no longer required to undergo sex reassignment surgery (SRS) to change the gender designation on their ID cards.

The change comes after the Supreme Court ordered the ministry of interior to legally change the gender of two transgender citizens from male to female, Haaretz newspaper reported.

A petition was filed at the court by a lawyer and an ex-soldier who started transitioning during her compulsory military service.

Film based on novel about Danish painter who was one of the first persons to undergo sex-change surgery

Eddie Redmayne has landed the lead role in the film version of the novel The Danish Girl, the story of an acclaimed transgender painter.

The film, inspired by the novel written by David Ebershoff, is about the Danish painter born Einar Wegener who was one of the first identifiable recipients of sex reassignment surgery.

Such surgery was still experimental when Wegener had the first of five operations beginning in 1930 - something that caused a sensation in newspapers of Denmark and Germany.

Transgender athlete Chloie Jonnson has filed a $2.5 million lawsuit against the CrossFit Games, a competition billed as the world’s premier test to find the Fittest on Earth.

Johnson filed suit after being told she would have to compete as a man in the competition which has been held annually since 2007.

Johnson underwent sex reassignment surgery in 2006 and is legally recognized as a woman in the state of California where she lives. She is 5 feet, four inches tall and weighs 151 pounds.

Council of Europe tells 29 member countries coerced sterilization of transgender people is a major human rights abuse, urges action

Twenty-nine countries in Europe are insisting transgender people are sterilized before their true gender is recognized in law.

That represents a major abuse of human rights and must stop, says a new report from the Council of Europe.

In many European countries, sterilization or sex reassignment surgery or both are a requirement for the country to legally recognize a transgender person in his or her new gender.

While gender reassignment surgery may incidentally cause someone to become sterile, some countries also insist on sterilization.

The video by user iiGethi features around 1,000 photos of herself taken over a three year period.

Shown in quick succession, viewers see her transform physically from a handsome man into a beautiful young woman.

In the clip's description, the user says she had Facial Feminization Surgery (FFS), starting from when she was roughly was 20 to 21 years of age.

Promising to stop transgender people from avoiding debts, the Californian city has voted to offer free operations

San Francisco is going to become the first US city to provide and cover the cost of sex reassignment surgeries.

The Californian city’s Health Commission has voted to create a program for treating transgender people fully, as reported by the Associated Press.

Barbara Garcia, Public Health Director, said San Francisco already provides transgender residents with hormones, counseling and routine health services, but stopped short of offering surgical procedures.

Thomas Beatie reveals that gender reassignment surgery has also been completed

Tom Beatie was legally a man when he gave birth to his first child in 2007. Photos of his bearded face and pregnant belly caused a media sensation and led to him be dubbed 'the world's first pregnant man.'
