The Salvation Army in Australia has apologized to the LGBT community for comments by a spokesman that appeared to endorse the view that gays were worthy of death in God's eyes

The Salvation Army in Australia has clarified comments a spokesperson made on Thursday in which he appeared to endorse the view that practicing homosexuals are worthy of death in the eyes of God.

Media Relations Director of the Salvation Army Australia’s Southern Territory, Major Andrew Craibe (pictured), had repeatedly refused to disavow sections of the Army’s Salvationist Handbook of Doctrine which cite a passage from the book of Romans that states that 'those who do such things deserve death’ when being interviewed by Melbourne gay radio station Joy FM.

A senior Salvation Army officer has repeatedly refused to disavow the organization’s belief that homosexuals are deserving of death when challenged on Australian gay radio.

Major Andrew Craibe, the Media Relations Director of the Salvation Army Australia’s Southern Territory, was speaking to Melbourne gay radio station Joy FM on Thursday to encourage people to donate towards the organization’s charitable works following a boycott call by pop star Darren Hayes.

Former Savage Garden singer Darren Hayes has suggested that LGBT people donate to other charities over the Salvation Army in Australia over its anti-gay views

Australian pop star Darren Hayes has asked LGBT people to think carefully before donating to the Salvation Army in Australia after learning that the organization believes homosexuals must stay celibate and would refuse full membership to anyone in an active same-sex relationship.

‘Important for gay people to know the true position of the Salvation Army when considering who to donate to,’ the former Savage Garden singer tweeted to his 60,883 followers on Friday.
