New York’s Cardinal Timothy Dolan warned that Pope Francis' recent comments about civil unions does not mean the pontiff has decided to change church doctrine.

In a 9 March interview on the NBC News program Meet the Press, Dolan pointed out the pope was asking an open ended question.

'Dirty Hands Vigil' staged in response to a cardinal’s invite that gays ‘wash their hands’ to participate in the Catholic faith

A group of LGBT Catholics and allies were threatened with arrest for staging a silent protest in front of New York City's St. Patrick's Cathedral.

The group stood outside the Fifth Avenue landmark with ash-covered hands, staging what they called a Dirty Hands Vigil in response to a blogpost published by Archbishop of New York Cardinal Timothy Dolan where he invited LGBT individuals to participate in the Catholic faith, but with the ‘clear expectation’ that they must first ‘wash your hands!’ of sin.

Yesterday (7 April) Joseph Amodeo announced he was stepping down from the junior board of Catholic Charities because Cardinal Timothy Dolan has allegedly ignored the plights of LGBT youth.

'As someone who believes in the message of love enshrined in the teachings of Christ, I find it disheartening that a man of God would refuse to extend a pastoral arm,' the former board member said in his letter to Catholic Charities (as reported by Huffington Post).
