Comment sparks protests outside his church

A Michigan pastor has sparked protests after he compared LGBTI people to ax murderers.

Clint Echols, pastor of First Baptist Church in Zeeland, framed homosexuality as 'lifestyle choice' that could be made at any moment in life.

'They say "oh wait a second, I’m gay, I’m bisexual, I want to change my gender." And that’s being true to themselves and being true to their internal compass,' he said during a 1 March sermon.

The hate group protested outside the Oscars in Hollywood on Sunday then demonstrated outside the offices of The Hollywood Reporter the next day as part of a protest against the media.

The founder of one of the most extreme homophobic religious groups in the United States was the subject of a series of investigations by the FBI, new documents have revealed.

US website The Daily Caller obtained the FBI’s files on Westboro Baptist Church founder Pastor Fred Phelps via a freedom of information request – the earliest of which dates from 1967 when Phelps was working as a civil rights lawyer.

The notoriously anti-gay Westboro Baptist Church has said LGBTI people face 'zero' discrimination in the US.

The 'God hates fags' church made the claim in an amicus brief to a federal court hearing an appeal to the of Kansas' gay marriage ban.

'What they seek – indeed what they crave – is society telling them their sin is acceptable in the sight of God,' the church wrote.

Westboro Baptist Church is known for turning up at funerals, events and concerts to protest what they call ‘Fag America.’

They often succeed in tarnishing whichever event they are protesting at by displaying their homophobic signs and chanting abuse at attendees.

However, on Saturday night in Portland, US the church met their match when they were driven away from one of their protests by pro-gay supporters. Their protest lasted for only 15 minutes.

State's governor and attorney general vow to continue legal fight to uphold ban

Same-sex couples began getting married in the state of Kansas on Thursday (13 November).

The marriages began after the US Supreme Court lifted the emergency stay it had issued earlier in the week.

Kansas Attorney General Derek Schmidt, who along with Governor Sam Brownback has vowed to continue the legal fight against gay marriage, had maintained that marriages should only be allowed in the two counties where successful lawsuits were filed.

But marriages were taking place across the state throughout the day.

Aussie comedian Adam Hills has set a challenge for the Westboro Baptist Church, which has announced plans to protest at Robin Williams’ funeral.

Going on a rant on the Channel 4 show The Last Leg, he had some harsh but incredible words for the ‘God Hates Fags’ church.

The brain behind Facebook’s popular ‘God’ humor page has crowdfunded over $US40,000 in a campaign to erect pro-gay billboards in the home town of the anti-gay Westboro Baptist Church.

‘God’s’ followers pledged the funds in just ten days, and ‘God’ now plans to buy more billboards with the message that ‘God loves gays’ in other parts of the United States if he can raise further funds.

Westboro Baptist Church has threatened to picket Robin Williams’ funeral for being a ‘fag enabler’.

The ‘God Hates Fags’ church has said it will hold signs at the memorial for the late actor, claiming he ‘decided to use his considerable talent to push filthy lifestyles, flagrant debauchery and hedonism.

WBC announced its plans on Twitter, using the hashtags #MustPicketFuneral and #PicketFuneral.

The 63-year-old actor died at his home in Northern California on Monday (11 August), and is believed to have committed suicide.

George Takei has taken on the Westboro Baptist Church with a video lip syncing Frozen’s Let It Go.

The gay former Star Trek actor has published the video in response to a homophobic cover of the Disney song done by the ‘God Hates Fags’ church.

The video opens with a title card, reading: ‘Presenting the Let It Go cover the world has been waiting for’.

It then cuts to Takei, lip syncing along to Idina Menzel and dancing in front of a green screen.

He is wearing a woolly hat and scarf, pleading with the church to ‘let it go’.

Notorious anti-gay group Westboro Baptist Church are planning to protest the funeral of Maya Angelou because of her pro-gay views.

The US-based group announced on Twitter they had added Angelou, who passed away on 28 May, to their picket schedule.

Angelou, 86 when she died, was a prolific poet, author and activist. She was vocal about her pro-gay views throughout her career.

Westboro Baptist Church picketed Kiwi pop star Lorde’s concert in Kansas City, Missouri armed with their homophobic posters but were faced with counter protests of sympathy for the death of their leader Fred Phelps.

The concert at the Midland Theatre in downtown Kansas City yesterday (21 March) was picketed by the infamous gay hate group holding their usual homophobic signs such as ‘God Hates Fags’.

However, Lorde’s fans and the people of Kansas staged their own counter protest.

The founder of the ‘God Hates Fags’ Westboro Baptist Church is dead, and now the future of the homophobic cult looks to be in doubt.

Fred Phelps, 84, died late Wednesday (19 March), according to online postings of his church.

And now, experts on the so-called church say it will likely fizzle out.

In the past few years, several members have left and it now only consists of a few remaining followers – nearly all family members of Phelps.

The 84-year-old founder of the most hated and homophobic family in America has died in a Kansas hospice

Fred Phelps, the founder of the ‘God Hates Fags’ Westboro Baptist Church, was pronounced dead today (20 March).

His son Timothy has said his 84-year-old father passed away just before midnight in a Kansas hospital last night.

Days before he died, estranged son Nate Phelps took to his Facebook page to announce his father was ‘on the edge of death’.

He said: 'I feel sad for all the hurt he's caused so many. I feel sad for those who will lose the grandfather and father they loved.

While some have called for the leader of the 'God Hates Fags' Westboro Baptist Church to be given a taste of his own medicine, Kansas gay rights campaigners believe the LGBTI community should take the high road

Several people have called to hold a gay rights protest at the funeral of Fred Phelps, the leader of the ‘God Hates Fags’ Westboro Baptist Church.

While he has not passed on yet, his estranged son Nate has confirmed the father of the ‘most hated family in America’ is on his deathbed.

He is currently in Midland Hospice house in Topeka, Kansas. No other information is available about his condition.

The Westboro Baptist Church, a cult-like organization based in Kansas has for years picketed soldiers’ funerals and protested against LGBTI rights.
