Former boxing promoter Kellie Maloney has said she now regrets her homophobic comments, saying at the time she thought it was a 'joke'.

The 61-year-old, who once ran as a UKIP candidate for London Mayor, has said coming out as a trans woman has made her more wiser and more tolerant of other people in the LGBTI community.

When she was campaigning in 2004, she said she would not go to Camden as there were 'too many gays'. She said, pre-transition, that she had a problem with them 'flaunting their sexuality'.

Rightwing political party UKIP is celebrating gaining its first MP in the British Parliament this morning, following a by-election yesterday in the constituency of Clacton, Essex.

New MP Douglas Carswell was previously Clacton-On-Sea’s Conservative MP. However, in August he defected from the Conservatives to UKIP, triggering a by-election in which he re-stood as a UKIP candidate.

The leader of the Eurosceptic, right-wing party has once again had to defend the views of his members.

This time, it was in reference to Roger Helmer, the Ukip byelection candidate who has described homosexuality as ‘abnormal’ and ‘undesirable’.

He also claimed homophobia does not exist and compared allowing same-sex marriage to legalizing incest.

Farage defended Helmer by arguing many older people are not happy with the idea of homosexuality.

David Bishop, a Tory candidate who hoped for election in Brentwood South, Essex, had to step down from his position after his anti-gay and racist tweets were revealed.

On 13 April, Bishop retweeted this message: ‘How CAN a gay guy keep a straight face?’

He was also exposed as tweeting anti-Islamic messages.

‘#Islam 'the religion of peace' & rape’ he tweeted on 27 April.

A major UKIP donor has said gay people are incapable of love.

Demetri Marchessini, a retired Greek business tycoon, also said wives cannot be raped by their husbands and black slaves had a ‘much better life’ than in Africa.

The sixth largest individual donor to the UK Independence Party was interviewed on television recently, where he said gay people are only capable of lust.

[There is] no such thing as fidelity in their relationships,’ Marchessini said on Channel 4 News.

‘They just all go out looking for action. That’s the way it is.’

More men than women would like to go on a date with UKIP leader Nigel Farage, a new poll has revealed.

The survey put the right-wing leader to the Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg and head of the Liberal Democrats in opposition ahead of a TV debate on 2 April.

Farage has refused to support same-sex marriage in the UK, saying he prefers gay couples to only have access to civil partnerships.

Clegg, on the other hand, was one of the most vocal supporters for equal marriage.

Some have struggled in the past to fully embrace the rich diversity of the LGBTI community.

But one man, Samuel Fletcher, is perhaps the most baffled man alive.

A UKIP councillor for Bracken Bank and Ingrow Ward in Keighley, he seems to believe bisexual and trans people are ‘part-time homosexuals’.

In the past, he has also accused LGBTI people of being 'strange', and saying British society has become 'far more complex and harder to immediately understand since it became socially acceptable to be openly homosexual'.

A UKIP politician believes business owners should be allowed to refuse to serve gay people.

Donna Edmunds, a Lewis district councillor and European Parliament hopeful, said all business owners should be allowed to refuse service to anyone they want for whatever reason they want.

Under UK law, the Equality Act 2010 protects people who access services from direct discrimination. This applies to disability, pregnancy, race, religion, or if they are LGBT.
