South Australia, New South Wales and Victoria already have similar schemes to expunge criminal records of men who were convicted for consensual gay sex

Tasmania's anti-discrimination commissioner Robin Banks has in her final report recommended that the state implements a dedicated scheme to erase historical convictions for consensual sexual activity between adult men.

The report recommends establishing a three-person panel made up of the Anti-Discrimination Commissioner, the registrar of the Working with Vulnerable People Registration Scheme and the dean of law at the University of Tasmania to review applications from men who want their criminal record expunged.

Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard has cancelled her keynote speech at the Australian Christian Lobby conference after head Jim Wallace said yesterday that smoking is healthier than gay marriage.

‘I believe yesterday's comments by Jim Wallace were offensive,’ said the PM in a statement.

‘To compare the health effects of smoking cigarettes with the many struggles gay and lesbian Australians endure in contemporary society is heartless and wrong.’

Liberal party politician Warren Entsch says an apology can't repair the damage done by Australian Christian Lobby head Jim Wallace after he claimed smoking was healthier than gay marriage.

Wallace made the comments at a debate on marriage equality at the University of Tasmania yesterday (5 September), prompting Prime Minister Julia Gillard to cancel her keynote speech at an ACL conference next month.
