Robert Gates led the dismantling of Don't Ask, Don't Tell while US Secretary of Defense

Former US Secretary of Defense Robert Gates has been chosen as the next leader of the Boy Scouts of America.

Gates assumes the role in May 2014, five months after the scouts change in policy regarding gay members goes into effect.

The BSA voted earlier this year to change its century-old policy of banning openly gay members up until they reach the age of 18. But the ban remains for adults scout leaders, employees and volunteers.

Gates has experience in such situations.

Festival favorite will air on OWN this month

The powerful documentary Bridegroom brought many in a star-studded audience to tears at the film's Los Angeles premiere on Tuesday (15 October).

Adam Lambert, who allowed his song Outlaws of Love to be used on the film's soundtrack, was in attendance and later tweeted: 'Humbled to be part of this beautiful film!'

Other celebrities in the audience included multiple Emmy winner Lily Tomlin, Oscar winner Cuba Gooding Jr., director Adam Shankman and out actor and GLAAD spokesman Wilson Cruz.

Shows like Modern Family, Glee and Pretty Little Liars contribute to strong representation

With its array of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender characters, the musical-comedy series Glee helps to make the FOX network the most LGBT inclusive broadcast US television network.

The media advocacy organization GLAAD released its 7th annual Network Responsibility Index (NRI) and the 18th annual Where We Are on TV Report on Friday (11 October) and gave some networks high grades while others struggled.

GLAAD report shows six major movie studios all but ignoring LGBT characters

Javier Bardem's bad guy bisexual in Skyfall and Alec Baldwin and gay club owner in Rock of Ages were two of a dwindling number of LGBT characters in movies released by Hollywood studios last year.

A report released by GLAAD today showed that out of the 101 releases from the major studios in 2012, only 14 of them contained characters identified as lesbian, gay, or bisexual.

Not a single one of the releases contained a transgender character, according to GLAAD's first annual Studio Responsibility Index.

Same-sex marriage will resume in California after the US Supreme Court dismissed a case challenging a lower court ruling which declared Proposition 8 unconstitutional.

Egyptian Canadian actor and LGBT rights advocate joins US gay media advocacy organization as a spokesperson and fundraiser

GLAAD, the US LGBT media advocacy organization, announced that the Egyptian/Canadian actor and LGBT advocate Omar Sharif Jr. will join its staff as spokesperson.

Sharif Jr. will become the organization’s co-spokesperson, alongside Wilson Cruz, and will also be helping with fundraising.

Commenting on the appointment, Sharif Jr said: ‘I’m thrilled to be joining GLAAD in their culture-changing work.

Judy Garland may have died in 1969, but her legend has endured - especially among the gay fans who continue to cherish her memory and her music.

Gay Star News recently chatted with various celebrities about the legend of Garland at opening night of the musical End of the Rainbow at the Ahmanson Theatre in Los Angeles in which Tony nominee Tracie Bennett pays Garland in the final months of her life.

‘She was a great and dear friend,' said Betty White who at 91, is the same age as Garland would be if she were still alive.

Singer to receive award for making 'significant difference' in promoting equality for LGBT community

Adam Lambert may not yet have a Grammy, but he's going to soon have a GLAAD Award.

GLAAD, an LGBT media advocacy organization, announced today that Lambert will receive its Davidson/Valentini Award at the San Francisco ceremony on 11 May.

The award is named after Craig Davidson, GLAAD's first executive director, and his partner Michael Valentini.  It is presented to an openly LGBT media professional who has made a significant difference in promoting equality for the LGBT community.

Jodie Foster's coming out publicly during her speech at Golden Globe Awards had the entertainment industry buzzing Sunday with many celebrities, gay and straight, expressing support or sounding off.

'Aww Jodie foster, I would like to be your friend,' tweeted Tony Award winning actor Alan Cumming, an openly gay actor.

Gay television personality Andy Cohen, host of Bravo's Watch What Happens Live, tweeted: 'MAZEL JODIE!! incredible.'

Cruz begins work today (4 September) as part of GLAAD's development team as he works to help to fund the organization's work amplifying LGBT stories.

Shortly after Barack Obama made history on Wednesday (9 May) by becoming the first US president to publicly support gay marriage, Ellen DeGeneres got on Twitter to express her gratitude.

'Thank you President @BarackObama for your beautiful and brave words,' she tweeted. 'I’m overwhelmed.'

DeGeneres, who is married to actress Portia de Rossi, was among the famous people in the entertainment industry who were quick with praise.
