LeRoy Butler was scheduled for anti-bullying presentation at Wisconsin church

Retired NFL player LeRoy Butler decision to send a tweet of support to now openly-gay NBA player Jason Collins has cost him an $8,500 speaking gig at a Wisconsin church.

Butler, who played safety for the Green Bay Packers, does not name the church but he took to Twitter today to share the fallout from the tweet to which simply read: 'Congrats to Jason Collins.'

Apparently some parents saw the tweet and complained to the church.

John Perez tells Gay Star News: 'It's going faster than most people imagined but it's not going fast enough'

When John Perez became speaker of the California State Assembly in March 2010, he was only the second LGBT person to be elected to lead a state legislative chamber in US history.

He now finds himself with lots more company - especially after last week's US elections where 118 LGBT people were elected nationwide.

'It was a phenomenal election across the country,' Perez tells Gay Star News.

An additional three gay men have joined the house of representatives and, more encouraging still, the approval of ballot initiatives means that gay people can get married in a further three states. While there’s work still to be done, the foundation for further advances in LGBT equality looks more solid than ever.

Wisconsin State Assemblyman Mark Pocan has won a seat in the US House of Representatives and made a little bit of history along the way.

Pocan, who is openly gay, succeeds Tammy Baldwin in the US lower house just as he had in the State Assembly. This marks the first time that one gay legislature follows another for the same seat. Baldwin on Tuesday (6 November) became the first openly gay member of the US Senate.

Pocan, 48, defeated Republican challenger Chad Lee in an electoral district that has been reliably Democratic in the past.

Minnsota teenager protests same-sex marriage with a t-shirt quoting Bible passages about truth and evil

A Minnesota student is defending her right to wear a t-shirt she designed which says gay marriage is a sin.

Concordia College senior Rebecca Julius created a black t-shirt that reads 'Sin is Sin' across the front, followed by three Bible passages about truth and evil on the back, Minnesota Public Radio is reporting.

Julius, a devout Wisconsin Synod Lutheran said: 'I don't identify with all these people that say homosexuality is a perfectly acceptable way to live; that's not me.

A record number of gays and lesbians are seeking seats in the US Congress and a surge of positive encouragement has followed.

Of the four openly gay members of Congress, the two longest-serving stalwarts are leaving their seats and their activist admirers are excited about a large number of gays hoping to win them and make history.

The Obama campaign has blasted Republican vice-president nominee Paul Ryan for his gay rights record.

When US president nominee Mitt Romney accidentally introduced Wisconsin representative Ryan as ‘the next president of the United States’ yesterday (11 August), the Democratic campaign were quick to criticize the social and economic conservative.

‘Every now and then I’m known to make a mistake,’ said Romney. ‘I did not make a mistake with this guy.’

US Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney has named Paul Ryan, who has voted frequently against gay rights, as his running mate.

As Ryan is seen as a social and economic conservative, it is expected he will appeal to staunch Republicans.

Like Romney, Ryan has a long record of voting against gay and human rights.

The Wisconsin politician, like Romney, has voted against marriage equality and adoption by same-sex couples.

In 2004, he voted for amending the US constitution to federally ban same-sex marriage.

Candidate tells boy in Wisconsin: 'Friends don’t let friends use pink balls'

Republican presidential hopeful Rick Santorum, whose campaign has included extensive anti-gay rhetoric, stopped a boy from using a pink bowling ball at a Wisconsin bowling ally on Wednesday (28 March).

'You’re not gonna use the pink ball. We're not gonna let you do that. Not on camera,' Santorum told the boy. 'Friends don’t let friends use pink balls.'

Santorum's comments were quickly tweeted by Reuters reporter Sam Youngman.

Wisconsin LGBT community produce Lady Gaga themed music video for anti-bullying campaign

Colton Boettcher, a young gay man from Madison, Wisconsin (USA) has produced, directed and edited an anti-bullying music video for the It Gets Better Project.

The video, choreographed to Lady Gaga's song Hair, stars members of the local LGBT community.

The YouTube video description explains: 'Hair is about being yourself, being true to who you are; as the song exemplifies, "you are the spirit of your hair, it's all the glory you bare", YOU are your #hair.
