As millions of Brits have had 'treatment' from unqualified therapists who may prescribe 'gay cures', several politicians are calling an end to quack treatment

A British member of parliament will introduce a bill to ban ‘gay cure’ therapists this week.

Geraint Davies, a Labour MP for Swansea West, has called for nationwide regulation of mental health therapists – ensuring any gay teen or adult is not faced with quack treatment.

‘Anyone can set themselves up as a counsellor or psychotherapist without training or experience with no recourse for the patient if something goes wrong,’ he said.

British gay man was forced to shut down his charity and considered suicide after he encountered a man who pretended to be a vulnerable teen

A gay British man is facing jail for four and a half years after posing as a gay teen to rob his foster parents and make a rape claim against his counsellor.

Shane Peake, 26, contacted Wiltshire Council in June pretending to be a gay vulnerable 17-year-old kicked out by his family.

He told them his name was Steven Shaw.

He was placed in supported lodgings, while LGBT charity Rainbow Rooms’ Will Clark helped out with advice and care.

But when the 43-year-old who ran Rainbow Rooms for six years began to have doubts, Peake accused him of rape.

Gay men have a fairly well-deserved reputation for generally being pre-occupied with sex. While saunas, sex-on-premises venues and sex parties are still the go-to option for many guys looking for a sexual release, the rapid growth of location-based dating apps such as Grindr have, for some guys, elevated the search for sex to a 24-7 occupation.

For some people, a constant need for sex can become a compulsion, an all-consuming obsession that health professionals describe as a ‘sex addiction’.

Hindsight is a beautiful thing. As I sat chatting with relationship counsellor Nicholas Rose, slurping on black coffee in London’s leafy suburban Chiswick, I couldn’t help wishing that I had been researching this story in my early 20s - but then I guess I wouldn’t have had the experience of numerous failed relationships to make me fully appreciate the pearls of wisdom that Rose was sharing.
