Thousands of political prisoners were 're-educated' in the island jail

The Croatian government has received a controversial proposal to turn a former gulag into a gay resort.

Only a few abandoned prison buildings stand on the uninhabited island of Goli Otok, which translates to the Barren Isle.

Between 1949 and 1956, 13,000 political prisoners were sent to the gulag for 're-education' when Croatia was part of Communist Yugoslavia. About 400 of them died there.

Lea DeLaria has been breaking barriers for some time. Not only is she a gay, butch woman, she is doing a damned good job playing one on TV.

Celebrated for her role as Big Boo on Orange Is The New Black, this 56-year-old has had a long and incredible career.

And now, she is the grand marshal of Manchester Pride today (23 August).

I spoke to her on the phone yesterday, and she was in an incredibly upbeat mood – definitely in the Pride spirit.

I hear girls have been trying to hunt you down, is that true?

Lea DeLaria, aka Big Boo, is excited to come back to Manchester. ‘The girls there are really hot!’

Manchester Pride has announced a celebrity Grand Marshal for 2014: Lea DeLaria from the hit Netflix series Orange is the New Black.

Most recently known for her role as Big Boo in the prison drama, DeLaria said: ‘It’s an honor to be invited to marshal the Manchester Pride parade. I can’t wait to return to Manchester. The girls there are really hot!’

Prior to Orange is the New Glack, DeLaria became the first openly gay comic to perform on television in America in 1993.

'I want to publicly apologize to Chelsea Manning and her supporters on behalf of SF Pride, and we look forward to a proper honor this year'

The organizers of San Francisco Pride have apologized to WikiLeaks whistle-blower Chelsea Manning for not naming her as last year's grand marshal.

In 2013 April Manning was picked as one of the several grand marshals for the end of June event. Approximately 24 hours after the choice was made public Lisa L. Williams, San Francisco Pride board president, rescinded it.

LGBT activists and allies held a San Francisco rally to mark the International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia (IDAHO) by declaring Bradley Manning the People's Grand Marshal of city’s Pride.

Manning is the gay U.S. Army Private accused of divulging a massive amount of government documents to WikiLeaks and has been spending nearly three years in jail without trial.

Uganda held a historic weekend long gay pride which turned out a success despite a police raid, widespread homophobia and anti-gay laws 

Uganda’s LGBT community was able to conduct a weekend of gay pride events despite police arrests and harassment.

The historic LGBT pride was a series of events held at Entebbe starting with a party and including a beach parade, more parties and a small film festival.

The event was well attended, despite the fact that in Uganda gay people face life imprisonment according to law and widespread homophobia from the public.

LGBT activists call for closure of safe house over allegations that staff member abused residents

A safe house for gays in Kenya has been rocked after a staff member was found guilty of 'gross misconduct' for allegedly sexually abusing a transgender resident.

The marshal, who has not been named, was sacked from his post following an investigation by the Gay and Lesbian Coalition of Kenya (GALCK).

According to GALCK, the trans 'guest' who the marshal is accused of abusing was staying at his private home from 26 June to 2 July, where she would sometimes do 'household chores'.

Tells Gay Star News: 'This is the last frontier of civil rights'

Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa welcomed thousands of LGBT people and their allies to his official residence Sunday afternoon for a star-studded garden party kicking off a week of Pride events that culminates in a two-day festival next weekend.

Chaz Bono, one of this year's LA Pride honorees, was at the party as was actress Molly Ringwald who will be grand marshal of next Sunday's Pride Parade in West Hollywood.

Villaraigosa, mayor since 2005, took some time during the event to speak with Gay Star News about his longtime commitment to LGBT equality.

Her character is having lesbian fling on ABC Family's The Secret Life of the American Teenager

Molly Ringwald, star of such iconic films as The Breakfast Club, Pretty in Pink and Sixteen Candles, was announced Thursday (24 May) as grand marshal of the LA Pride Parade.

The parade takes place on June 10 and the honor comes at a time when Ringwald's character on ABC Family's The Secret Life of the American Teenager is about to embark on a lesbian fling. She has starred as Anne Juergens on the series, now in its fourth season, since 2008.

The transgender son of Cher and Sonny Bono, who shot to fame starring in hit US TV show Dancing With The Stars, was this year's grand marshal in the procession.
