Tyler Glenn, the lead vocalist and keyboardist of the American alternative rock band Neon Trees, has come out publicly as gay.

'I've always felt like I'm an open book, and yet obviously I haven't been completely,' he tells Rolling Stone magazine in an issue out Friday (28 March).

Russian President Vladimir Putin described openly gay singer Elton John as 'an outstanding person [and] outstanding musician.'

Putin, interviewed by a small group of journalists over the weekend also said of the pop icon: 'Millions of our people sincerely love him despite his orientation.'

John, who performed concerts in Russia last month, has responded to Putin's remarks with a blistering indictment of the controversial anti-gay laws the leader has championed.

US punk band Against Me! have unleashed their first album since lead singer Laura Jane Grace revealed her true gender identity.

Their sixth album Transgender Dysphoria Blues will reveal Grace's struggles to come out, with song titles such as True Trans Soul Rebel.

In the May 2012 Rolling Stone interview, Grace spoke about her transition from male to female and experiencing gender dysphoria as a child.

Matt Damon and Dame Judi Dench have been nominated in the British film awards for their roles in LGBTI movies

Gay films Behind the Candelebra and Philomena are leading the BAFTA nominations announced today (8 January).

The film about the life of gay musician Liberace and his lover starring Matt Damon was nominated for five British film awards at a ceremony in London this morning.

As it struggled to receive financing in Hollywood because of the gay theme, it will not be eligible for an Academy Award (Oscars) as it was only shown on television in the US.

Uganda’s President Yoweri Museveni has said he will not just sign the new Anti-Homosexuality Bill without checking it carefully.

The bill, passed by parliament in a shock move last week, no longer has the death penalty for gays, but does offer life in prison for repeat homosexuals.

The star of NBC's The Voice could also have been described as a staunch LGBTI ally.

Levine, who has a gay brother, made headlines last year when he said that if he were US president for a day, the first thing he'd do is make gay marriage legal.

Chrisie Edkins had campaigned for transgender rights and performed at LGBTI pride events around the world

A transgender singer and parent who campaigned worldwide for trans equality was found hanged after struggling to decide whether to go through surgery.

A coroner heard today (30 October) how Chrisie Edkins was found dead, hanging for the hatch of a loft at her home, by her girlfriend.

Musician Chrisie Edkins had performed live at gay pride events around the globe.

The glamorous 33-year-old had been suffering from ‘severe depression’ in the months leading up to the tragedy. She had also taken a pill overdose just days before she died.

Titica has become a major Angolan star despite being ‘stoned’ and ‘beaten’ – her appointment shows how she has changed hearts and minds in the country

Titica, a 25-year-old transgender music star and dancer in Angola, has been made a goodwill ambassador by UNAIDS.

Titica has broken down prejudices to become a major star through her use of rap-techno music called Kuduro in the African country, which is Catholic dominated and still theoretically punishes homosexuality with hard labor.

According to Open Society Initiative for Southern Africa (OSISA), a non- governmental organization, her appointment is likely to be more controversial than any previous goodwill ambassador due to her gender identity.

Elton John says he knows there are plenty of people who do not believe he should be performing in Russia in December with the country's anti-gay laws still in place.

But he's going to do it anyway.

'On one hand, I want to say, "I'm not going and you can go to hell, you guys." But that's not helping anyone who's gay or transgendered over there,' he tells National Public Radio

A Russian film has been rejected from a major festival over gay propaganda laws in Russia

A Russian film depicting gay love was rejected by festival organizers out of fears they would break the 'propaganda laws'.

'Winter Journey’ is a story of a gay musician falling in love with a petty street criminal, and was pitched and subsequently rejected from Kinotavr, one of Russia’s main film festivals.

Director of the film Sergei Taramayev believes the rejection stems from controversial legislation banning the promotion of ‘gay propaganda’ to minors, despite the film being given an age rating of 18.

Sara Gilbert has done a whole lot of talking and not much acting since helping to create and being a co-host of the CBS talk show The Talk in 2011.

But the actress who came to fame as Darlene Connor on the sitcom Roseanne is carving out some time to return to her sitcom roots in the upcoming CBS sitcom Bad Teacher based on the feature film that starred Cameron Diaz.

Gay Star News meets the Iowa musician breaking the mould by creating authentic tunes for gay romance

When I was growing up, I spent a lot of time fantasizing my pop music heroes were possibly singing about boys instead of the attractive women that dominated their music videos.

While it still seems not everyone in the music industry is able to be publicly open about their sexuality, it’s really encouraging to see a number of talented musicians releasing honest and authentic music that’s also, thankfully, really good.

My current gay music crush is singer Eli Lieb who I caught up with recently.

Works include Angels in America and Oscar-nominated screenplay for Lincoln

Tony Kushner may have lost the Oscar race this year for Lincoln but next week, he will be the recipient of a prestigious National Medal of the Arts.

The White House announced today that Kushner, the winner of a Tony Award and a Pulitzer Prize for Angels in America, will be honored on 12 July along with director George Lucas, musician Herb Alpert and writer Elaine May.

Kushner will be honored for his contributions to the theater and films.

TV host Ellen DeGeneres has been named as the most powerful gay person in the world in a new list published today.

The 2013 World Pride Power list was celebrated at a gala dinner held at the Corinthia hotel in London last night (28 June) ahead of the release of the list to time with Pride in London today.

But some of those on the list will be controversial with British journalist, Julie Bindel, coming in at number 83 despite being slammed in the past for transphobia.

US comic and presenter Ellen DeGeneres moves up from 10th place in the 2012 list.

It shows the life of one gay man from birth to death, from discovering his sexuality to finding a partner and then spending a long, happy life with him.

It’s created by three artists from Seattle, Washington, USA; musician Macklemore, his producer Ryan Lewis and film director Mary Lambert. And it’s become such a big hit on YouTube it has been seen by over 10 million people.

Whitney Houston, Skyfall and the Olympics named most searched on Google in UK in annual 'Zeitgeist' list

Lesbian X Factor contestant Lucy Spraggan topped a list of music artists most searched on Google in the UK this year.

The internet search engine's annual 'Zeitgeist' list revealed the singer-songwriter was this year's top trending musician, beating One Direction, the Spice Girls and Korean rapper Psy.

Spraggan left the British version of the hit talent show early on in the contest due to illness.

She impressed viewers and judges with her self-penned songs.

BBC Lip Service TV star and musician has revealed she will perform at the legendary gay festival Sydney Mardi Gras

British lesbian musician and actress Heather Peace has announced she will perform down under at the world famous Sydney Mardi Gras.

The performance, which has been headlined by gay icons like Kylie Minogue, will be the beginning of a tour which will take Peace across Australia.

Touring from10 – 24 February, Peace said it was a ‘dream come true’.

‘It’s been a dream of mine to perform at Sydney Mardi Gras and I’ve also had so many requests on social media from Australian fans for me to come over and play,’ she said.

Record numbers participated in Taiwan's gay pride parade, Taipei calling for marriage equality

The 10th annual Taiwan LGBT Pride Parade took place today in Taipei, the country’s capital, with a record number of over 65,000 participants.

Taiwan’s gay pride started off ten years ago with a mere 500 participants, growing into one of Asia’s largest LGBT pride parades.

The parade proceeded through downtown Taipei, with a festive carnival atmosphere, replete with rainbow flags and flamboyant costumes.

Thirty-nine-year-old singer says she wants to set an example for her son

Australian country singer Beccy Cole will come out publicly as a lesbian for the first time in televised interview tonight.

Cole was interviewed with her two country singer friends, Kasey Chambers and Gina Jeffreys, for Australian Story, a regular program on national TV channel ABC.

‘I think for years Beccy has had this secret, that she really does want people to know about but didn’t really know when was the right time and how to do it too,’ Jeffreys says on the program.

Sydney’s bear community is celebrating its wintertime festival in August this year with eight events across five days

In 2012, Sydney Bear Pride will feature eight events over five days running from August 1 to 5.

Now in its third year running, Sydney Bear Pride will open with a Bear Pride Dinner at Smash Sausage Kitchen, located on Newtown’s King Street, on Wednesday, August 1 from 8pm.

On the Thursday, Darlinghurst’s Supper Club, on level two of the Oxford Hotel, will host a live performance from 8pm by bear musician Eric Kuhlmann, which will also be the premiere of his world tour of his Red Light Songs of Lust, Love and Death show. Entry is $15.
