US Navy selects Petty Officer 2nd Class Thomas Sawicki and his boyfriend for ceremonial 'first kiss'

It was a military kiss like no other.

When Petty Officer 2nd Class Thomas Sawicki and his shipmates returned to San Diego this week, Sawicki's boyfriend was there to greet him for the ceremonial kiss.

When Sawicki locked lips with Shawn Brier at Naval Base Point Loma, it marked the first time in US Navy history that a male same-sex couple had been chosen for the traditional coming home honor which is decided by lottery.

US Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel and his wife Lilibet included an image of a US Navy sailor proposing to his boyfriend among images of military families in a Christmas video to defense personnel

A gay couple have been included in a Christmas video to defense personnel from the US Secretary of Defense for the very first time this year.

Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel made the video with his wife Lilibet to send to US military families, and a photographic montage along that theme in the video shows a US sailor proposing to his partner at a naval base.

‘This month as you gather with family and friends Lilibeth and I want to wish all of you a very merry Christmas and happy holidays,’ Chuck Hagel says in the video.

HMS Illustrious was in the Mediterranean north of the Suez Canal in early November last year when a message came through from the British government.

Typhoon Haiyan had just whipped through the Philippines, the deadliest on record, killing over 6,000 people.

They turned the ship around and steamed towards the South China Sea.

On board was an openly gay former make-up artist – once the least likely person to find on a Royal Navy ship – now a highly-trained sailor.

A US navy communications specialist has spoken out to The Washington Post about being discharged for transitioning to being male – showing that part of the LGBTI community is still legally barred from serving in the US Armed Forces

Transgender sailor Landon Wilsonhas spoken out about being forcefully discharged by the US Navy after superiors discovered he had transitioned to be a male – showing that some LGBTI people still face legal discrimination in the US Armed Forces past the end of Don’t Ask Don’t Tell.

The US Defense Department still retains a policy that was set when being transgender was viewed as a form of mental illness and classes it as a ‘paraphilia.’

Organizers behind the 5K course with over 15 physically demanding obstacles including ‘Cherry Picker’ and ‘Hello Sailor’ are letting future competitors vote for next year’s host cities.

Go Shindo conquers bullying, alcoholism and suicidal thoughts to come out

In May, 26-year-old Go Shindo, often likened to comic strip sailor Popeye’s girl Olive because of her scrawniness, became the world women’s boxing flyweight champion, thrashing defending champion Renata Szebeledi of Hungary.

However, that knockout was only part of Shindo’s battles.

After the victory, the 26-year-old remained seriously perturbed, wondering if she should continue to remain in women’s boxing since she felt like a man.

It's tradition to share a 'first kiss' or a 'first hug' when a sailor returns from sea but Jerrel Revels had a lot more in mind.

Upon returning from six months aboard the USS New Mexico this week, Revels surprised his partner of nearly a year with a marriage proposal.

The sailor walked onto the pier at the Naval Submarine Base in Groton, Connecticut, on Monday (12 August), got on his knee, and popped the question to Dylan Kirchner.

SGLMG’s video is an explosion of LGBT celebration. There’s bondage, rainbow roads, sailor dancers, fireworks, cocktails, Amanda Lepore, carnivals, sea, sun, beaches, lots of dancing and little clothing.

And 2014 will see SGLMG celebrate its 36th year, the first was held in 1978 and many of its original partiers still attend.

Founded in 2011 by Nino Giordano and Fabio Freddi, LGBT comics house Renbooks has now published its first Italian comic and has big plans for the future

A Bologna based LGBT publishing house has launched its first Italian comic – about a gay man who steals and wears women's jewelry.

Renbooks, founded in 2011 by Nino Giordano and Fabio Freddi, has just published Barba Di Perle by Florentine artist Flavia Biondi.

It's the first time the company has published its own title – their previous comics have been imported. But Renbooks has big plans for revolutionizing the gay comic market in Italy and giving LGBT Italians a new voice.

After six months at sea, boyfriend is there waiting for a kiss

It's a scene that would not have been possible more than nine months ago.

But in the post-Don't Ask, Don't Tell era, a sailor named Trent was able to step off of the USS Carl Vinson this week after six months at sea and be greeted with a kiss and a hug by his boyfriend Lee.

The reunion was captured in a fun video made Trent's best friend, Aaron (we don't know their last names!), who captured the moments of anticipation waiting for the ship to dock in San Diego and for the sailors to disembark.

Until the military's Don't Ask Don't policy was officially repealed in September, Petty Officer 2nd Class Marissa Gaeta and Petty Officer 3rd Class Citlalic Snell had kept their relationship a secret.

Now, thanks to a kiss seen around the world Wednesday, everyone knows the two female sailors are a couple.
