A man has been injured stopping a gay man from jumping off a bridge when he instead fell into the river

A good Samaritan in the Philippines city of Cebu has been injured after preventing a suicide attempt by a gay man.

31 year old Ricky Espinosa saw a man about to jump off a bridge over a river in the city’s Kamputhaw district around 1.30pm on Friday and rushed to save him.

But in the course of trying to prevent the man from jumping, he himself fell into the water, sustaining a number of injuries on hitting the riverbed.

Philippines Police said that both men were drunk at the time, and that they were yet to ascertain the gay man’s identity.

Catholic church is ‘huge stumbling block’ in the fight against the spread of HIV in The Philippines, says expert

The Philippines’ rapidly rising HIV infections, mainly spread via sex between men, is fuelled by the Catholic church discouraging condom use, experts say.

Although the recorded HIV prevalence rate is relatively low in the Philippines, with 9,669 confirmed cases in a population of nearly 100 million, many cases remain undetected and the nation is one of only seven countries in the world where HIV cases have risen by over 25% since 2001.

LGBT rights groups issue a ‘State of the LGBT Under Aquino’ address

LGBT rights activists in the Philippines have greeted President Aquino’s third state of the union address with protests today (Monday 23).

The gay-friendly Metropolitan Community Church of Quezon City joined thousands of protestors marching down Commonwealth Avenue.

The church’s Reverend Ceejay Agbayani said he was protesting about the failure of the president to pass a reproductive health bill that would halt the rise of death in childbirth.

A lesbian married in California has filed a federal lawsuit to stop her own deportation.

Jane DeLeon, from the Philippines, risks deportation because the US government will not recognize her three-year marriage to her American wife Irma Rodriguez.

Under the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), the 1996 law that defines marriage as between a man and a woman, one spouse in a same-sex marriage can not sponsor the other for a green card.

The Philippines’ ‘King of Comedy’ starred in hundreds of films, many as a gay man

Much-loved Filipino comic actor Rodolfo Vera Quizon, aka Dolphy, who starred in over 100 films from the 1950s until 2010, died yesterday aged 83.

Despite fathering 18 children with six women, Dolpy was know for depicting gay characters.

Dophy played gay roles in popular comedies Facifica Falayfay (1969), Fefita Fofongay, Sarhento Fofongay (1973), A… Ewan (1974) and the more serious films Ang Tatay Kong Nanay (1978) and Markova: Comfort Gay (2001).

After the US, most Google searches for terms related to 'same-sex marriage' are from the Philippines

The Philippines ranks number two in the world after the US for searches relating to same-sex marriage, Google’s Insights for Search revealed today.

The search data tool shows that there’s been high interest in same-sex marriage in the Philippines since February 2011.

After the Philippines, the countries which search the internet the most for terms relating to ‘same-sex marriage’ are Canada, Australia and the UK.

Father of computer science who was prosecuted for being gay is honored across the world

Alan Turing, known as the father of computer science, the codebreaker that helped win World War 2, and the man tortured by the state for being gay, is being celebrated today (23 June).

The British born mathematician and cryptanalyst’s birthday is being honored across the world, with events planned in the UK, USA, Brazil, China, Czech Republic, the Philippines, New Zealand, Israel, Spain, Switzerland, Norway, Italy, Portugal and Germany.

His centenary is also being celebrated with a Google doodle, a functional Turing machine that predated the modern computer.

LGBT political party Ladlad fears homophobic Ang Prolife group will 'oppress' marginalized Filipinos if elected as party list

The world’s allegedly only LGBT political party from the Philippines has slammed an anti-gay Catholic group’s election bid after claiming homosexuals are part of a ‘culture of death’.

The Ang Prolife party filed for accreditation to run as a party list candidate in next year’s mid-term elections, stating their opposition to abortion, euthanasia and LGBT culture, which they claim destroys and undermines life and family values.

The revealation by Ang Ladlad yesterday (25 May) comes shortly after the Philippine National Police (PNP) expressed its willingness to accept gay cops just a week ago.

Six boys in the Phillipines have been banned from attending their graduation after posting a gay kiss on Facebook

Six teenage boys in the Philippines, aged between 16 and 17, have been banned from attending their graduation after posting a simulated gay kiss on Facebook wearing their school uniforms.

The senior high-school students, who are due to graduate on Friday from the Infant Jesus Academy in Marikina City, were told after officials discovered the photos that they are not allowed to join in the ceremony or receive their diplomas.

Deaf Rainbow Philippines pledges to fight for rights of minority within a minority at conference

Life for a minority within a minority was explored in Manila on Saturday at a conference called Deaf Talks: A Forum for Deaf LGBTs on Human Rights and HIV.

At the conference, founder of Deaf Rainbow Philippines addressed the 30 or so attendees using sign language and an interpreter. He said the biggest problem for deaf LGBT people such as him is lack of employment. ‘With no job, no money. Then difficult to find partner. Even on Facebook, gay men with normal hearing ridicule us. Because of broken grammar,’ he said.
