The European country has become the latest to gain marriage equality after its Supreme Court lifted legal restraints that prevented same-sex couples from tying the knot.
The old regulation will unfortunately end on 31 December 2018, meaning same-sex couples will have to wait until 2019 before they’re able to get married. But we’re sure it’ll come around in the blink of an eye!
‘A refreshingly inclusive judgment’
Speaking to Gay Star News, ILGA-Europe Executive Director Evelyne Paradis said: ‘This decision is really positive news – not only does it open up marriage to everyone but it makes registered partnerships available to all couples too. It’s a refreshingly inclusive judgment.’
She furthermore added: ‘ILGA-Europe are sending all our congratulations to the LGBTI activists, legal experts (including Dr. Helmut Graupner who represented the couple involved in this case throughout their journey), supporters of the Ehe-gleich citizen’s initiative, and all the allies who stood together to call for equality.’
