US anti-gay preacher Pat Robertson has claimed teenagers are ‘too young’ to make decisions about their gender or sexuality.
During an interview on Christian TV show The 700 Club on Thursday, Robertson attempted to help the mother of a 17-year-old Christian who identifies as a lesbian.
The mother wrote: ‘I believe that she is confused, and I have reminded her of God’s promises for her.
‘I don’t accept this lifestyle because I believe God’s word and truth for marriage.
‘I continue to believe and pray for revelation and God’s truth over her. How do I have a relationship with her?
Robertson told the mother to love her daughter, and let her know she would be there for her – but make it clear that her ‘lifestyle’ was unacceptable.
‘Young girls have crushes, and they have crushes on their teachers and they have crushes on other girls as well as boys,’ Robertson said.
‘That’s one of those things that happens, but that’ll get differentiated as she gets older.’
He added: ‘If she gets wrapped up in that lifestyle, she may never get out of it.’
Trans teens were also the subject of Robertson’s suspect parenting advice.
‘Many young people they think they’re transsexual,’ he said.
‘They think they’ve got to have a sex change operation, they’ve got to do this, that, and the other, and they don’t really know what they’re talking about because they’re too young to know.’
This is the latest in a string of bizarre comments Robertson has made about LGBTI issues.
Robertson hit the headlines in July 2015 when he suggested legalizing same-sex marriage would lead to ‘love affairs between men and animals’.
He has since insisted that same-sex marriage is still illegal in the US, despite a high court ruling making same-sex marriage legal in all 50 US states on 26 June 2015.
