Here are 10 celebrities whose lives were forever changed by having LGBTI kids

Johnny Depp is a proud father to 16-year-old Lily-Rose

There can never be enough out and proud LGBTI celebrities in the public eye.

But what of the celebrity parents of LGBTI children? Surely, when they make it clear how proud they are of their kids, it can be just as powerful?

Here, we check with the straight stars who have parented a non-heterosexual, queer or questioning child – stars who now, for the most part, are as out and proud as their amazing kids.

Barbra Streisand

Singing icon Babs and her 49-year-old gay son Jason Gould are so close, they even recorded a duet of Irving Berlin’s song How Deep Is the Ocean for her last album, Partners.

Marie Osmond

Speaking to Diane Sawyer in 2013 about her daughter Jessica, who came out at 17, Marie Osmond declared her support for gay marriage, saying: ‘I believe in her civil rights, as a mother. I think my daughter deserves everything she desires in life.’

Gay icon Cher has admitted to initially having a hard time accepting her son Chaz’s transition. But as Chaz put it himself in 2014: ‘Now our relationship is better than ever. We’re really on equal footing.’

R. Kelly

The I Believe I Can Fly singer has tried to imply reports of his son Jay’s transition are inaccurate – but Jay’s mom, Drea, has said: ‘All I can say about Jay is he makes it so easy to be proud. For parents, we need to realize our kids have their own journeys. Parents get it wrong when they don’t support their children.’

Susan Sarandon

Oscar winner Susan has spoken of her pride that son Miles ‘colors outside the lines’ in terms of gender, although 23-year-old Miles, who enjoys wearing dresses, doesn’t identify as LGBTI, saying: ‘I don’t have a struggle with my gender identity. I feel more male than female. And I am mostly heterosexual.’

Magic Johnson

NBA legend gave Oprah a lovely quote about his son E.J.’s coming out as gay: ‘I would say it was a shock in the beginning, but also I knew. I was just waiting on him to tell me, and he did. E.J. is just a lovable guy. As I told him, I said, “E.J., I love you, so I’m going to support you no matter what.”‘

Gloria Vanderbilt

News anchor Anderson Cooper has said in interviews that he came out to his now-91-year-old mom when he was in college. According to reports, the art icon is now keen to see her son and his boyfriend Benjamin Maisani walk down the aisle.

Warren Beatty and Annette Bening

Warren and Annette’s 23-year-old activist son Stephen Ira Beatty describes himself as a ‘a trans man, a faggy queen, a homosexual, a queer, a nerd fighter, a writer, an artist and a guy who needs a haircut.’ The film star couple have never publicly acknowledged Stephen’s gender identity.

Johnny Depp

Lily-Rose, the film star daughter of Johnny Depp, came out as sexually fluid in an Instagram post relating to the Self Evident Truths Project last year. Depp has since said: ”She’s got thousands of followers on social media, and they were all taken completely by surprise. But not me. I already knew because she tells me everything — she’s not afraid to say anything to me. We’re super-tight and I’m very proud of our relationship.’
