The New York City Police Department is investigating an alleged rape of an 19-year-old man in a city park.
The crime happened yesterday, 12 June. The victim, as reported by the website Gothamist, walked into a Union Square Park men’s bathroom. He was followed by a suspect, who allegedly sexaully assualted the victim in one of the stalls.
The victim was transported to hospital.
GSN spoke to Sharon Stapel, the Anti-Violence Project’s executive director. The organization is investigating the crime and has reached out to the department.
She noted such attacks like this are rarely reported to law enforcement.
‘Sexual violence in the LGBT community is underreported in part because we don’t know how to talk about men as victims of sexual violence,’ Stapel said. ‘Men may not know where to go when they experience sexual violence.’
She added AVP is prepared, with counselors and resources, to help all victims of anti-gay crimes.
A recent report by the group pointed to a 4% increase in anti-LGBT violence in the city.
