Brazil has elected a new president named Jair Bolsonaro – and he is an out and proud homophobe.
Bolsonaro, who is also pro-torture, won the leadership in the South American country with 55% of the vote yesterday.
The 63-year-old has also caused controversy with his racist and misogynistic comments, including telling a female lawmaker: ‘I would not rape you because you are not worthy of it.’
‘If your son starts acting a little gay, hit him with some leather’
Meanwhile, his appallingly homophobic views and comments date back years. Here are five of the worst.
1 ‘I will not fight nor discriminate, but if I see two men kissing in the street, I’ll hit them’ – Folha de São Paulo newspaper, 2002
2 ‘I would be incapable of loving a homosexual child. I’m not going to act like a hypocrite here: I’d rather have my son die in an accident than show up with some mustachioed guy’ – Participação Popular, TV Câmara, 2010
3 ‘If your son starts acting a little gay, hit him with some leather, and he’ll change his behavior’ – from same interview as above
4 ‘If a homosexual couple comes to live next to me it will devalue my home! If they walk around holding hands and kissing, that devalues it. No one says that out of fear of being pinned as homophobe’ – Playboy, 2011
5 ‘I do not kiss my wife on the street. Why face society? Why take that into the school? Little children of six or seven, watching two men kiss as the government wanted them to do. Is this democracy?’ – TIME, 2018
