Activists free after arrest at Istanbul Pride

German politicians free after brief detainment

Detainees, including German politicians released after arrest at Istanbul Pride.

Green Party politician, Volker Beck and Green Member of European Parliament, Terry Reintke were both released after a brief detainment.

Reintke also tweeted that Max Lucks, Green Youth Group speaker and Felix Banaszak, Green party speaker were among those arrested. She later tweeted about their release.

‘Finally! @max_lucks, @fbanaszak and many other #LGBT activists have been released. #istanbulpride’

Reintke tweeted that at least 19 people were detained. The arrests were made after the Istanbul LGBTI+ Pride Week Committee tried to read their press statement in Tünel.

This comes a week after the Turkish government cancelled pride due to threats of violence.

Riot police outnumbered the few supporters who showed up despite the ban and dispersed the crowds with tear gas and rubber bullets. The same thing happened last week on 19 June, when police ended the Trans Pride Parade in Istanbul.

In the past Istanbul pride attracted thousands of supporters which made it the largest pride parade in a muslim country. Since 2003 Istanbul Pride had been held without any incidents. Last year’s event was also cancelled.

On FaceBook Reintke posted: ‘The more they put pressure on us, the more we will stand together.’
