Actor Joel Grey, 82, so ‘grateful for support’ after coming out as gay

Actor Joel Grey has responded to the support after coming out as gay at the age of 82.

The father of actress Jennifer Grey, who was married to actress Jo Wilder for 24 years, has said he now feels comfortable being known in public as a gay man.

‘I don’t like labels,’ Grey told People magazine. ‘But if you have to put a label on it, I’m a gay man.’

On Twitter, Grey thanked the many people who sent him messages of support.

‘Grateful for all the love and support coming my way,’ he said. ‘What a gift.’

Grey won the Oscar and Tony for playing the Master of Ceremonies in Cabaret on Broadway and in the 1972 film version.

Speaking about his childhood in Cleveland, Ohio, he said he heard grownups speak about men being jailed for being gay at around the same time he realized he liked both girls and boys.

His daughter, 54, best known for her role in Dirty Dancing, said she was pleased her father felt comfortable to talk about his sexuality. She said, along with many other friends and family, have known for a long time.

‘Mostly because more people are free to own their true nature and can hopefully come closer to love and accept themselves as they really are, no matter what age, no matter how long it takes, to finally be free of the lies or half truths, it is freedom,’ she said.
