Alex Landi talks breaking stereotypes as Grey’s Anatomy’s first gay Asian role

Grey’s Anatomy actor Alex Landi opened up about playing the show’s first Asian gay character.

‘[Producers] wanted a very masculine ‘bro’ type,’ Landi said in a recent interview with Attitude, ‘They wanted him to be openly gay.

‘That was disclosed to me before the audition,’ he revealed.

Alex Landi plays Dr Nico Kim, who has a romance with Levi Schmitt (played by Jake Borelli). Kim kissed Schmitt in a recent episode of the hit-show.

Alex Landi said while there has been one other Asian doctor on the show – Sandra Oh’s Cristina Yang – his character is the first Asian male. He’s also the first openly gay Asian doctor.

‘I just love how diverse Grey’s is,’ Landi then said. ‘Less than 3 per cent of Asians are represented on TV, and less than 1 per cent are LGBT+, so for them to combine both of those minorities in one role is great.’

He then added: ‘Growing up, I’d watch tons of movies and the leading men were white, traditionally they’re always white.’

He questioned why there can’t be an Asian James Bond and revealed he’s always wanted to be a Marvel superhero.

Jake Borelli comes out as gay

At the end of last year, actor Jake Borelli came out as gay, alongside his character on the show coming out as bisexual.

Borelli wrote on Instagram: ‘As a gay guy myself, tonight’s episode was so special to me.

‘This is exactly the kind of story I craved as a young gay kid growing up in Ohio, and it blows my mind that I’m able to bring life to Dr. Levi Schmitt as he begins to grapple with his own sexuality this season on Grey’s Anatomy.

‘His vulnerability and courage inspire me every day, and I hope he can do the same for you.

‘To all of you who feel like little Levis out there, know that I do too, that you are seen, and that we’re all in this together.

‘And to everyone who has supported me over the years, I can’t thank you enough. I love you more than all the stars,’ he wrote.

Grey’s Anatomy has been on air for 15 seasons now. This latest season features the first gay male love story for the show.
