André Aciman announces he’s writing a CMBYN sequel and fans are losing it

Armie Hammer and Timothee Chalamet in Call Me By Your Name

American writer André Aciman has ‏announced he’s working on a Call Me By Your Name sequel.

While rumors of a second movie about the love story between Elio and Oliver were already filling the Internet, Aciman’s announcement is giving hope to the huge CMBYN fandom.

What we know so far about CMBYN 2

Actor Armie Hammer, who plays Oliver opposite Timothée Chalamet’s Elio, had already confirmed a sequel was definitely happening earlier this year.

‘How much do I know and how much could I tell you are two very different things,’ he said in an interview in September.

Moreover, openly gay director Luca Guadagnino had said the only problem with a sequel is finding an appropriate title, leaving fans hopeful for a second movie. He suggested the sequel could take place five in the early 1990s, five years after the first movie.

Aciman will write CMBYN 2

Aciman’s tweet about a sequel seems to confirm we haven’t seen the last of Oliver and Elio.

‘I would actually love a sequel to Call Me by Your Name. In fact I am writing one,’ the novelist wrote.

It is not clear whether Aciman is referring to a second novel or implying he will be working on the script with Guadagnino.

James Ivory said he wasn’t on board

CMBYN’s screenwriter James Ivory, who earned an Oscar for the screenplay, vocally expressed his disapproval in November.

When asked by if he was going to be involved in a sequel, the 90-year-old said: ‘No, I don’t and I wouldn’t want to be involved. I can’t imagine having to make Timothée Chalamet look 45. I mean, that would be horrendous and so fake looking if that’s what they are going to do!’

‘But any case, André Aciman just laughed at the idea to me. He said it was not a good idea. They can’t do a sequel, I think, without him being on board. It’s his characters and his story. But that seems to have died down a bit. I haven’t heard much about it lately.’

Timothée Chalamet liked Aciman’s tweet, leading to further speculations that Aciman might be behind the new screenplay.

Fan’s reactions

Fans are obviously over the moon, celebrating with CMBYN dancing GIFs.

Many thanked the author for changing their lives with his novel.

‘CMBYN has changed my life. Thank you Mr. Aciman for writing the sequel and by doing so you’re making my life better,’ one commented.

‘This is the most beautiful Christmas gift. Whatever you’ll write, Mr. Aciman, thank you will all my heart,’ one said.

‘Make Elio a top,’ someone else suggested.

‘If you write the movie sequel, give them a happy ending. Please!’ another fan wrote.

However, not everyone is convinced Call Me By Your Name should have a sequel.

One user wrote: ‘Although I would love to read a sequel, I feel the story between Elio and Oliver is over. I don’t think a sequel is necessary, but I would read it if you write one!!’

‘I don’t think it is a very good idea because even when the end was tragic it was kinda beautiful because of that. Anyway, I’m buying whatever you decide to write so go for it dear writer!!’
