An anti-gay group accidentally raised thousands of dollar when they tried to sabotage an LGBTI youth event.
The Australian Same Sex Gender Diverse Formal, organized by Minus 18, is a dance to which LGBTI teens can bring their same-sex partners and where whatever they want.
This year, Minus 18 launched a crowdfunding campaign for those who could not afford the $40 tickets.
This is where the Stop Safe Schools Coalition stepped in. They hatched a cunning plan to buy up tickets and prevent LGBTI youth from attending.
‘The more tickets sold to us the more youth we protect,’ they wrote in a now-deleted Facebook post.
‘They are non-refundable unfortunately so if you are then unable to attend you can’t get your money back or a ticket sold to someone else.’
But Minus 18 was not selling tickets on their crowdfunding site, but raising money to cover the cost of attendees who could not pay.
Minus 18 set an initial target of raising AU$15,000 for 500 tickets. At the time of writing, they had raised more than AU$50,000.
Minus18 said they will move the event at a larger venue and the extra money will also go towards the South Australian Same Sex Gender Diverse Formal in November.
