Anti-gay Malaysia PM given honorary degree in US

Malaysia’s prime minister was awarded an honorary degree from a US university for his work in creating ‘unity’, despite being known for his anti-gay views.

Datuk Seri Najib Razak was given the doctorate from the Ohio University board of trustees today (15 January).

According to trustee David Brightbill, the PM was honored in recognition of his work in education and commitment to democracy and creating unity in Malaysia.

‘He fulfills many of the requirements for the award…based on an outstanding record of accomplishments as a national and international leader who deals with society’s most pressing problems,’ Brightbill said, reported the New Straits Times.

However, the Prime Minister has been criticized for not supporting LGBT rights.

In November, he was slammed over a declaration of human rights signed by the 10 nations of ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) which failed to include protection for sexual minorities.

He said he rejected LGBT rights because Malaysia had its own values.

‘It does not mean any weakening in terms of the principle of human rights,’ he added.
