Archbishop of Wales comes out in support of same-sex marriage, gay sex in relationships

Archbishop Barry Morgan supports LGBTI rights

The Archbishop of Wales has come out in support of same-sex marriage and said there was nothing wrong with same-sex couples having sex in committed relationships.

Barry Morgan, who will retire from his post in January, endorsed marriage equality in his last address to the Governing Body of the Church of Wales.

While same-sex marriage is legal in Wales, it is not allowed for Welsh priests to preside over gay weddings.

‘Christians have discovered that most people flourish best when this living for others finds its focus in a commitment to one other person: when a couple make a lifelong commitment within which sex properly belongs,’ Morgan said.

‘Those of us who were or are married have found that to be the case. Why would we want to deny such a possibility for those who are attracted to their own gender?’

The Bible has more than one view on homosexuality, and he urged Christians to look at God’s teachings as a whole rather than lines from Leviticus.

‘It absolutely will not do to quote texts from parts of the Bible in a simplistic way without reference to their contexts,’ he said, comparing how the Church used to defend slavery using similar biblical interpretation.

‘God through His Holy Spirit has led us into the truth of seeing things in a totally different way today and we are rightly horrified when we read about people who have been kept as slaves by others.’

Instead, the Archbishop rejected criticism same-sex marriage was ‘abandoning the Bible’ but instead ‘interpreting it in a way that is consistent with the main thrust of the ministry of Jesus’.

Last year, members of the governing body voted 61 in favor of allowing same-sex marriages, while 50 voted for no change and nine to allow blessings.

Despite having a majority, it was not enough to approve a change in Church law.
