Arizona passes measure declaring porn a ‘public health crisis’

In a close vote, Arizona Republican legislators passed a measure declaring pornography a ‘public health crisis’.

The state Senate passed the actionless measure in a 16-13 vote, following the House’s 32-28 vote in February.

Rep. Michelle Udall (R) first introduced the measure, which states that porn is ‘a crisis leading to a broad spectrum of individual and public health impacts’.

It details several of these impacts, including low self-esteem, eating disorders and ‘toxic sexual behaviors, emotional, mental and medical illnesses’.

Udall’s measure also posits that porn has consequences on society as well. It states porn normalizes sexual violence, especially against women and children, and also increases the ‘demand for sex trafficking, prostitution and child pornography’.

‘Billions of dollars worldwide are being made upon this industry that is poisoning the minds of our citizens,’ said Sen. Sylvia Allen, another Republican who supports the measure.

She further called porn the ‘root problem’ of many of society’s ills.

The measure calls for nothing

In its language, the measure takes no explicit action against porn or the industry. It simple denounces it and calls for ‘recovery programs’.

‘This bill, on its face, sounds like it might be a good idea, but it doesn’t have any teeth,’ said Sen. Victoria Steele (D). ‘It won’t result in any changes. It is a way for people to check off that box and make it look like they’ve done something.’

This is not the first time Arizona has placed porn at the center of its grievances.

Earlier this year, a Republican lawmaker introduced a bill that would make porn fees go towards building Trump’s border wall.

Arizona is not the only place cracking down on porn. In the UK, a new age restriction on porn goes into effect on 15 July.way

Porn, nudity, and more are ways for LGBTI artists and people to see themselves. Some believe LGBTI people, especially bisexuals, will be hurt by the UK age restriction and Tumblr’s porn ban also hurt LGBTI artists.
