As George Takei turns 80, we celebrate his singular wit and wisdom
George Takei originated the role of Sulu in Star Trek TV series and films

With his 80th birthday falling on 20 April, Star Trek icon George Takei is now officially an octogenarian.

The man who played the role of Hikaru Sulu in the original Star Trek TV series and feature films has remained firmly in the spotlight by becoming a social media phenomenon in recent years.

Takei is a prolific tweeter with more than 2 million followers who has plenty to say about LGBTI equality, about human rights and in recent years, about ‘crazy-haired man-boy tyrant’ Donald Trump.

‘Some know me as Mr. Sulu from Star Trek but I hope all know me as a believer in, and a fighter for, the equality and dignity of all human beings,’ he writes in his Twitter bio.

Takei is also one of the most popular people on Facebook with more than 10 million ‘likes.’

He once said of his social media reach: ‘Well, you know, I do think in the larger span of things, I owe it all to Star Trek, because Star Trek has given me this pop icon status if you will, and one of the gifts have been this megaphone I have which amplifies my voice and I can reach people. And I do think the movement for equality for LGBT Americans is in the same context of all of the great American movements, you know, the basic fundamental ideals of this country of justice and equality.’

To mark the occasion of Takei turning 80, we share some of his various tweets and quotes from recent years.

Sorry, couldn’t help myself. #Trollololollol
