What is ASMR (Autonomous sensory meridian response)?
The phenomenon – which generates low-grade euphoria through tingle sensations emanating from the scalp and moving down the back of the neck and into the body – has created its own YouTube community in recent years as more people begin to identify with these sensations.
ASMR is most commonly triggered by specific acoustic sounds, such as rituals like brushing hair or the simple tapping of objects. Role play, including visits to the Doctor or being fitted for new shoes, has also become increasingly popular.
While the phenomenon might seem strange to some, and has become victim to sexualisation, it promotes mindfulness techniques and improved sleep patterns.
The ASMR YouTube community has become so popular that some, like FredsVoice, have seen videos receive over 400,000 hits and generate over 120,000 subscribers for their channel.
Here we have rounded up some of our favorite, and personally ASMR triggering, YouTubers to introduce you to the community – if you haven’t discovered it already or even know you have it (not everybody responds).
