A straight Christian couple who vowed to divorce if same-sex marriage becomes legal in Australia are now backtracking.
Aussie couple Nick and Sarah Jensen made headlines in 2015 after promising to divorce as an act of protest.
Nick wrote in the Canberra City News: ‘The decision to divorce is not one we’ve taken lightly.’
At the time, they said they would divorce, but remain together, and continue to have children. They’ll even continue to call each other ‘husband’ and wife’ and consider themselves married in the eyes of God.
Jensen explains: ‘As Christians, we believe marriage is not a human invention.
‘My wife and I, as a matter of conscience, refuse to recognise the government’s regulation of marriage if its definition includes the solemnization of same sex couples,’ he said.
Cut to Australia legalizing same-sex marriage
But now they’ve backtracked.
In a statement to news.com.au, Nick said: ‘My previous public comments regarding civil divorce never envisaged me separating from my wife, but rather our marriage from the state.
‘The legislation currently makes it untenable for us to do this under the law.
‘The point we were highlighting and that still stands however is the fact that a redefinition of marriage changes the agreement under which we were originally married.
‘We will be making no further comment,’ he said.
Many took to Twitter to ask about the Christian Aussie couple.
One said: ‘Now, where was that couple that went public prompting they were going to get a divorce if Australia voted YES?’
HAHAHA I HOPE EVERY HETEROSEXUAL COUPLE WHO SAID THEY WOULD GET DIVORCED IF MARRIAGE EQUALITY WAS LEGALISED IN AUSTRALIA IS GETTING THEIR DIVORCE PAPERS READY AND SIGNED!

Another said: ‘WHO ELSE IS COMING TO NICK AND SARAH’S DIVORCE PARTY.’
And speaking of divorce, one person on Twitter joked: ‘first gay divorce: the race is on.’
