A new campaign ‘You’re having a lesbian’ to promote gay marriage is being launched in Australia and New Zealand.
The campaign has an unusual angle. It highlights the fact that marriage equality is every family’s issue because ‘Any child can be born gay’.
The campaign’s YouTube video ‘What R U having?’ shows a straight couple, a pregnant woman and her partner, having an ultrasound scan.
The doctor says ‘Would you like to know what you are having?’. She then tells the proud parents ‘You’re having a lesbian’ and the couple look lovingly at each other and break into happy and radiant smiles.
The campaign’s billboard features a smiling woman baring her pregnant belly, with the slogan: ‘Congratulations, you’re having a lesbian’.
Parents and Friends of Lesbians And Gays (PFLAG) spokeswoman Shelley Argent told new.com.au the campaign to support gay marriage was aimed at all families, especially straight couples.
‘Being lesbian or gay is not a choice. It’s got nothing to do with culture or parenting skills. It’s just the way you are. You’re born that way’, she said.
Campaign creator Steve Minon, a freelance Brisbane advertising creative director who donated his time free, said the ad was designed to ‘get people thinking, and challenge them a little.’
He added: ‘We’re trying to point out to any family that marriage equality can be your number one priority, without your knowing about it.’
New Zealand MPs passed the Marriage Amendment Bill allowing same-sex and transgender couples to marry in April this year.
