Australia: Two men found guilty of gay bashing murder

Two men were found guilty of murder Friday (27 March) in what prosecutors described as a ‘vigilante attack’ to rid a park in Perth of gay men.

Daniel Wade Jones and Mark Taylor were accused of fatally injuring Warren Batchelor, 48, after they caught him having sex with another man in a disabled toilet in November 2013.

Both men denied the charges but a jury found them guilty after five hours of deliberation.

The man who was in the cubicle with the victim testified that the pair burst in and punched, kicked and beat Batchelor with a meat pole.

They then threatened the unnamed witness with a knife. The witness charged at the men and fled in his car with a friend.

Batchelor died two days later in hospital.

His family described him as ‘a kind, loving and caring man.’

‘We miss him every day. We are very pleased with the verdict. We thank everyone,’ they said in a statement read outside court on their behalf.

Jones and Taylor face life in jail and were remanded in custody until sentencing next month.
