Barbie officially supports marriage equality and the LGBTQ community

It’s official: Barbie is Team Marriage Equality.

The decades-old classic doll sported a ‘Love Wins’ t-shirt on the Barbie Style Instagram page recently alongside fashion designer Aimee Song.

Song created the shirt and Mattel unveiled it on their titular doll at the same time they revealed Song’s own Barbie doll.

‘Proud to wear this “Love Wins” shirt with @songofstyle!’ the caption exclaims.

‘Did you know that her exclusive t-shirts benefit different causes and non-profits? Such an inspiring initiative and fabulous few days I have spent with Aimee, she’s a doll! 💖’

Song designed the shirt for Pride Month this year. Half of the shirt’s proceeds go to The Trevor Project.

As the designer explained on her website, she aimed to make a t-shirt each month whose proceeds would go to a non-profit. For Breast Cancer Awareness Month, she created her rose tits tees.

While she wasn’t able to make a new shirt every month, she didn’t pass up June.

‘So many of my friends (actually most of them) are a part of the LGBTQ community, and I know that life was not always easy for them,’ she wrote when unveiling the shirt.

‘They’re all in great places in their lives now and they’re such great examples of ‘It Gets Better.’ As an ally, and someone who really believes that love wins, I created this tee shirt to benefit The Trevor Project.’

As Barbie puts it: ‘The recipe for a picture perfect LA day!’

Song also put up her own posts, enthusing: ‘OH MY GOSH, I’m a Barbie girl!’

‘Never in a million years did I think this would happen,’ she wrote.

‘I remember when my sister Dani and I used to play with our Barbie dolls we’d make them take their shoes off before entering their Barbie house. 🙈🙈 THANK YOU to the entire @Mattel team and my team for making my Barbie dreams come true!’

About the Love Wins shirt, Song made another post about her and Barbie supporting equality.

Then she teased: ‘Or as some of you have speculated, maybe we’re secretly dating.’

Twitter is all over a bisexual Barbie and welcoming her with open arms.

Barbie continues the progressive streak

This is not the first time Mattel or Barbie’s taken steps forward for progress.

Last January, the company unveiled new body types for their dolls, including petite and curvy.

More recently, Mattel revealed Olympic athlete Ibtihaj Muhammad would be the next doll in their ‘Shero’ line. In 2016, Muhammad became the first Muslim-America to compete for the United States wearing a hijab.

Her doll joins the likes of Ava DuVernay and Misty Copeland and will be available next year.

GSN reached out to Mattel for comment about their Love Wins Barbie.

Update 11/28: Mattel made the following statement regarding this Barbie.

‘We are an inclusive brand that celebrates diversity, kindness and acceptance. We are proud to partner with Aimee Song, a top fashion influencer, and promote her t-shirt collection.’
