A same-sex attracted bull is being given a lifeline to save him from the slaughterhouse.
Animal lovers are hoping petitions and a crowdfunding campaign will be enough to make sure he lives the rest of his life in a sanctuary.
Benjy the bull was bought by a Mayo county farmer to breed with his cows but the farmer soon discovered that the Charlolais breed stud was not interested in the heifers.
The farmer initially thought that Benjy might just be shy about ‘doing the business in public.’
But after a veterinary expert checked him out a different reason was suggested to him.
‘At first I didn’t take seriously that the bull could be gay but after seeking advice I know this can happen,’ he told the Irish Times.
As Benjy was by now too old to be castrated, the farmer was in the process of fattening him up for slaughter.
But when news of his fate made the headlines, Ireland’s Animal Rights Action Network (ARAN) and TheGayUK stepped in with a fundraising campaign to buy his life on the website Crowdfunder.co.uk.
An online petition started by animal lover Jenna Starar is also helping to save his life.
The campaign has so far raised £300 ($470, €380) of the £5000 ($7890, €6320) total.
