- They hope to repeat the camp cult appeal of The First Wives Club with new comedy Family Jewels.
First Wives Club stars Bette Midler, Goldie Hawn and Diane Keaton are set to reunite for a brand new comedy – Family Jewels.
The film will follow Hawn, Midler and Keaton as their characters have to spend the holidays together after the man they were all once married to drops dead in a New York department store. Together they endure the festive season, along with their kids and grandkids.
It’s a reunion for the three Hollywood legends who starred together in 1996 American comedy classic, The First Wives Club.
And although Family Jewels has a different story and is not a sequel, we suspect it will share many of the comic genius and themes of their 1996 hit.
In The First Wives Club movie, Keaton, Hawn, and Midler play three divorcées. They unite to seek revenge on their ex-husbands who each left them having left them for younger women.
The First Wives Club became a surprise box-office hit following its North American release. It would eventually gross $181million worldwide. And since then, it has become a camp classic boasting a cult LGBT+ following.
Family Jewels will start filming soon
New Republic is hoping to start production this year on Family Jewels.
And producers Brian Oliver and Bradley Fischer think they’ve found the perfect cast.
Fischer said: ‘The chemistry of Diane, Bette and Goldie is unmatched and irresistible. And I’m thrilled to help reunite them on screen for generations of fans.’
Meanwhile Oliver added: ‘This movie fits perfectly in our plan to finance and produce four to six major studio theatricals a year and puts movie stars back where they ought to be – on the big screen.’
However, Family Jewels is unlikely to have the same cameo cast as The First Wives Club. The 1996 movie featured appearances by the amazing Sarah Jessica Parker and Maggie Smith. Rather more unfortunately, Ivana Trump even had a cameo role.
