Here’s a first look at Bette Midler making her return to Broadway

Bette Midler is already the toast of Broadway.

Bette Midler is returning to Broadway and she looks fabulous doing it.

The gay icon and star of Hocus Pocus will once more dazzle the Great White Way as Dolly Gallagher Levi in Hello, Dolly!.

Ahead of tonight’s (15 March) first preview performance, a first production shot of Bette in full Dolly dress has been revealed.

And it’s as glorious as you’d expect from her.

Dressed to the nines in a red gown, red feather headpiece and plenty of jewels, and supported by a chorus of red-jacketed waiters, Bette looks ready to dazzle audiences.

Even before any official images, Hello, Dolly! was already turning out to be one of this season’s hottest tickets.

So far it has racked up $40 million in pre-sales. It also broke box office records by selling $9 million worth of tickets on the first day of sales, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

And going by the feedback the show already received, based on yesterday’s (14 March) invited dress rehearsal, the revival is well worth the hype.

The revival, playing at the Shubert Theatre, marks the first new production of Hello, Dolly! on Broadway since its original premiere in 1964.

It is produced by Scott Rudin and directed by Jerry Zaks, with choreography by Warren Carlyle. It is described as paying homage to the original staging.

Previews run from 15 March with opening night on 20 April, just days before the official Tony Awards cut-off date.
