Boy George sheds tears in striking, new Culture Club video

Boy George is moved to tears in his new video

Boy George and Culture Club released a new single today. The video is sure to delight fans.

Not only is the track, Life, a stirring, gospel-influenced ballad, but the video finds George singing the anthem directly to camera in a stripped back, simple film directed by legendary photographer, Rankin.

Culture Club released their first new album (also called Life) in almost 20 years in October. It reached number 12 in the UK charts. The band, fronted by Boy George, achieved worldwide success in the early 80s, before imploding later in the decade.

They reunited briefly in the late 90s, but George has spent much of the intervening years concentrating on his DJ’ing and solo projects. He’s also fought well-documented battles with addiction, including a short spell in prison in the UK.

However, he’s enjoyed a career resurgence in recent years, buoyed by the critical reception to his 2013 album, This Is What I Do and appearances on TV shows such as The Voice (in the UK and Australia).

In the new, semi-animated video, George sports a variety of different outfits. However, as the song builds to its climax, we see him stripped back, with no hat and little make-up. Tears run from his eyes as he sings.

‘New beginnings, enlightenment, spiritual growth and personal redemption’

‘John Lennon said ‘LIFE’ is what happens while you are busy doing other things, but sometimes you have to stop and look with sadness and pride at what you have done and created in your own life and value the rich complexity of it!’ George said in a statement about the new song and video.

‘As the lyricist of ‘Life’ I wanted to express something truthful, honest and bare while carrying an uplifting message of hope. It’s my story but it’s a story so many people will resonate with. A story of recovery, transformation and the start of a brand new journey which has already brought Culture Club well deserved accolades.

‘It’s a song about second chances and new beginnings, enlightenment, spiritual growth and personal redemption.’

Culture Club have just completed a successful UK tour. They return in 2019 with festival dates in Switzerland and Denmark.
