British singer Damian died yesterday at the age of 52 following a three-year battle against cancer.
Damian Davey (real name Damian Baker) enjoyed a top ten hit in the UK charts in 1989 with a cover of The Rocky Horror Show’s The Time Warp. He followed it up with a cover of The Sweet’s Wig Wam Bam.
Although these were to prove his only mainstream chart successes, the gay singer continued to perform in LGBTI venues and at Pride festivals around the country throughout the 1990s and 00s. He also made appearances at Gran Canaria and Benidorm Pride.
Originally from Manchester, he was managed by Nigel Martin Smith, who went on to greater fame and fortune as the pop Svengali behind boy band Take That. Martin Smith posted news of the performer’s death on Facebook yesterday.
‘The very first musical act I managed Damian Baker has just passed away.
‘We had a huge hit together with THE TIMEWARP and when I went on to create Take That Damian joined us as support act for their very first tour of the UK.
‘Camp and outrageous Damian was the life and soul of the party.
‘He dealt with cancer like he dealt with life – head on and with no fuss
‘You are free from pain now old friend enjoy your new spirit body and party on in the skies.’
