Slot machines, rollercoasters, nightclubs, a million sparkling lights… Come to think of it, Blackpool, England is a bit like Las Vegas, isn’t it?
As such, Britney Spears should feel right at home when she plays the UK entertainment capital’s Tower Festival Headland on Saturday 1 September. It’s the climactic date of the European leg of her upcoming world tour.
The Womaniser singer of course wrapped her four-year Piece of Me: Vegas residency at The AXIS at Planet Hollywood Resort and Casino in December, but takes the show on the road in June.
She’s of course known for playing huge arenas in capital cities, and will naturally hit the O2 Arena in London (from 24-26 August.)
As such, fans reacted with bemused but fervent wonder when the Blackpool date was announced – just as they did in January when her date at Scarborough’s Open Air Theatre (on 17 August) was revealed.
Now, the real story behind the biggest curveball in pop has emerged.
Here, Peter Taylor of live concert promoters Cuffe and Taylor shares with GSN the surprising story behind the bookings, staring with the personal reason he’s excited for the Blackpool date (in a nutshell, it’s his hometown)…
‘I thought, if I can secure these, then this is going to be a real talking point’
‘When we first started talking about the Britney tour there were a couple of dates and venues I had in mind. I thought, if I can secure these, then this is going to be a real talking point.
‘Of course, venues such as London’s O2 and Glasgow’s SSE Hydro were always going to be on the table. But we really wanted Scarborough Open Air Theatre and Blackpool to be included too.
‘The Scarborough date was included when the tour was first announced in January. As those dates sold so quickly we were then in a position to announce three extra dates. I am beyond thrilled that one of those is in Blackpool.
‘We have wanted to do a huge headline gig on Blackpool’s prom for a number of years. To now be doing that with such an international icon is absolutely fantastic.
‘Blackpool is, of course, known around the world as the seaside capital of fun. Comparisons are regularly drawn with Las Vegas.
‘I just had to convince Britney’s management that these comparisons were accurate and that this would be the perfect location to close the European tour.
‘‘I explained to her management in LA that the venue is very similar to the Hollywood Bowl’
‘It was a very similar case with Scarborough Open Air Theatre, where the tour kicks off.
‘I explained to her management in LA that the venue is very similar to the Hollywood Bowl and that we have huge successes there, so they were happy for the tour to begin in Scarborough.
‘Cuffe and Taylor exclusively programs all live music at the Open Air Theatre. As well as Britney Spears heading there, we have a full summer of live music. This includes concerts with Lionel Richie, Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds and Bastille. It also features Alfie Boe, Steps, James Arthur and much more.
‘We’ve always specialized in taking music to the people. We started this with Lancashire’s Lytham Festival by growing an event in our hometown into something that now attracts legendary artists from across the globe.
‘The many tours we do often visit towns and cities that don’t ordinarily attract huge household names.
‘Now, we’re bringing Britney to both Scarborough and Blackpool. It doesn’t get much bigger than that and we can’t wait.
‘This really is a once in a lifetime opportunity to see Britney in these two iconic seaside resorts.’
