Caitlyn Jenner says she is ‘blown away’ by John Oliver’s support for trans rights

Caitlyn Jenner has tweeted her support for John Oliver’s recent segment on Last Week Tonight, in which he voiced his support for transgender rights.

In the segment broadcast at the end of June, Oliver, a British comedian and host of the late-night talk show, told viewers the best way to show respect to those who identify as trans.

He said: ‘If you’re still wondering, “What do I call a transgender person? It’s so confusing.” Actually, it’s pretty simple: Call them whatever they want to be called.

‘You can do it. We do it all the time. David Evans woke up one day and said: “Everyone call me The Edge.” And we all went: “Fine, The Edge, are we talking the noun or the verb?”‘

Oliver discussed the progress America has made recently in trans rights, but highlighted the issues trans people still face.

He criticized the news media for frequently asking transgender people intimate, inappropriate questions about sex-reassignment surgery and hormone therapy, telling viewers: ‘Some transgender people do go undergo hormone therapy or sex-reassignment surgery as part of their hormone therapy. Some do not.

‘And, interestingly, their decision on this matter is, medically speaking, none of your fucking business.’

Jenner, whose TV mini-series I am Cait is set to premiere July 26, commended Oliver yesterday.

She tweeted: ‘Blown away by @iamjohnoliver and @LastWeekTonight’s show highlighting transgender rights. Bravo!’
