This man has to tell his father about his 'preference' which breaks the family's tradition

Is the experience of switching car brands similar to coming out as gay?

Well, in Infiniti‘s latest ad campaign, a young man appears to be suffering the same anxiety as coming out as gay when he goes to his father for a ‘car-fession.’

Apparently, he has just bought an Infiniti car, which he knows would offend his father, who is a loyal BMW driver. In fact, it’s been the family’s long tradition to only drive BMWs.

‘Look this isn’t easy for me either,’ the son says. ‘I’m sorry if you don’t like it, but it just feels right.’

‘This isn’t how we raised you,’ the father replies.

‘You must have always known I was a little bit, different,’ the son argues.

The ad has garnered a mix of responses.

AdWeek kind of praised the storyline, saying:

‘The confession is perfectly awkward, and subtle too, as the market leader—clearly Dad’s preferred brand—is glimpsed only in photos.

‘By the end, though, the message is clear. Infiniti is for the young, empowered driver. And that old, stodgy nameplate is for old, stodgy folks who just don’t get it.’

However, some feel that the ad ‘trivialises’ the real coming out experience for gay people.

What do you think?
