The Trevor Project honored Cara Delevingne on Monday (17 June) with the Hero Award at TrevorLIVE in New York.
During her acceptance speech, the actor and model spoke about her own journey discovering her sexuality and identity. She also spoke of Hollywood executives who told her she would ‘never make it’ if she came out, which is a familiar refrain.
Delevingne, 26, also spoke about her girlfriend of one year, Ashley Benson.
‘I also have another very special woman in this room to thank and you know who you are,’ she began.
‘She’s one of the people who help me love myself when I needed it most and I really needed it. She showed me what real love is and how to accept it, which is a lot harder than I thought.’
Delevingne ended the sweet and touching speech with a shout-out, using Benson’s nickname: ‘I love you, Sprinkles.’
The speech begins around the 3:21:30 moment.
Benson was equally supportive, posting photos and videos of Delevingne during the speech from the audience.
The story of Cara and Ashley
For their one-year anniversary, Delevingne posted a gif of her and Benson sharing a passionate kiss on Instagram. She captioned it with an all-caps #PRIDE, several emojis, and tagged Benson.
Previously, Delevingne rented out New York City’s Natural History Museum overnight for Benson’s birthday.
They also sent Twitter into a collective meltdown when photos captured them moving a sex bench into their new home.
