Cast of Hairspray Live! just got even gayer

Billy Eichner stars in season 2 of Difficult People.

Hairspray Live! won’t air on NBC until more than two months from now but already it’s in the running for the gayest TV show of the year.

The addition this week of comic Billy Eichner to the still-growing all-star cast only further solidifies its chances for that unofficial title.

The openly gay Eichner will show up in the second act of the musical that airs on 7 December.

Already in the cast are out performers Harvey Fierstein (as Edna Turnblad), Rosie O’Donnell (the gym teacher) and Sean Hayes (Mr. Pinky).

The executive producers of the production are the openly gay team of Craig Zadan and Neil Meron.

Eichner is best known for his hit shows Billy on the Street and Difficult People.

He will portray a local TV newscaster named Rob Barker who reports on bubbly white teenager Tracy Turnblad (Maddie Baillio) and her escape from the law as she attempts to integrate the TV dance competition known as The Corny Collins Show.

The rest of the cast includes Ariana Grande (Penny Pingleton), Jennifer Hudson (Motormouth Maybelle), Kristin Chenoweth (Velma Von Tussle), Martin Short (Wilbur Turnblad), Derek Hough (Corny Collins), Dove Cameron (Amber Von Tussle), Garrett Clayton (Link Larkin), Andrea Martin (Prudy Pingleton), Ephraim Sykes (Seaweed J. Stubbs) and Shahadi Wright Joseph (Little Inez).
