Olympic gold medalist Caster Semenya wins Athlete of the Year Award

South African runner Caster Semenya who won gold in the 800m at the Rio Olympics earlier this month was awarded Athlete of the Year Award.

At an event held on Saturday 28 August, the 25-year-old Semenya won the SPAR gsports Award and received a standing ovation from the audience.

Minister of Sport Fikile Mbalula handed the out athlete the award and also awarded her with a 2016 Minister’s Recognition of Excellence Award.

In a post by mambaonline Semenya thanked her fellow South Africans for the great support they’ve given her over the past few weeks.

‘It’s just so fantastic,’ she said before adding: ‘I dedicate this award to my haters.’
