Cate Blanchett denies lesbian past: ‘I’ve never had sex with a woman’

Cate Blanchett has denied having a lesbian past and said she has never had sex with a woman.

Last week, the Australian actress was quoted as saying she had had ‘many’ relationships with women in an interview with Variety magazine.

Blanchett plays a wealthy married woman who falls in love with an ambitious shopgirl in her new film Carol, which premiered to rave reviews at the Cannes Film Festival on Saturday (16 May) night.

At a news conference the next day, Blanchett was quick to refute any lesbian rumors.

‘From memory, the conversation ran, "Have you had relationships with women?" And I said, "Yes, many times. If you mean I’ve had sexual relationships with them, the answer is "No," she said.

‘But that obviously didn’t make it to print.’

The mother of four added: ‘But in 2015, the point should be: Who cares?’

However, Blanchett said we were living in ‘deeply conservative’ times.

‘There are 70 countries around the world where homosexuality is still illegal so it still seems to be an issue,’ she said.

‘I think what often happens these days, if you are homosexual, you have to talk about it constantly; it has to be the only thing you put before your work and any other aspect of your personality.’
