Australian actress Cate Blanchett has revealed she has had ‘many’ lesbian relationships in the past.
The two-time Oscar winner, who has been married theater director Andrew Upton for 15 years, plays a bisexual woman in her upcoming film Carol.
During an interview with Variety magazine, Blanchett, 45, was asked whether it was her ‘first turn as a lesbian.’
‘On film – or in real life?’ she asked coyly.
Pressed about whether she had had past relationships with women, she reponded: ‘Yes. Many times,’ but did not elaborate.
Like Carol, who never comes out, ‘Blanchett doesn’t necessarily rely on labels for sexual orientation,’ the magazine notes.
‘I never thought about it,’ she said of how she envisioned the character.
‘I don’t think Carol thought about it.’
The actress prepared for the role by reading banned erotic novels.
‘I read a lot of girl-on-girl books from the period,’ she said.
