It’s International Women’s Day. An official day, first suggested in 1910, to celebrate the women of the world. The United Nations adopted the day in 1970.
In moving and inspiring ways, people are taking to social media to honor the day. From celebrities to politicians and more, it’s beautiful seeing the outpouring of support.
Janelle Monáe, who recently wowed us with a bisexual anthem, praised black girl magic.

Ellen DeGeneres talked about the Time’s Up movement. No more discrimination.
It’s #InternationalWomensDay. There was a time not long ago that women couldn’t vote, or open credit cards without their husband’s signature, or compete in the Olympics, or do their jobs without being harassed. That time is up. #TimesUp

In honor of #InternationalWomensDay, I want to celebrate some of the women and girls who inspire me every day.
These women resist inequality, insist on a better world, persist against all odds, and enlist others in our shared fights.

At an event, NME asked singer Troye Sivan about the women who inspire him most. He had the perfect answer. Laverne Cox, as a trans woman, for how prolific she is in her work. He also mentioned the women of the Me Too movement. Perhaps most heartwarming, he said all the women in the world working three jobs, or going after their dreams, or taking care of people.
And then, of course, there’s Billy Eichner.
Happy International Women's Day to Alexa and all the disembodied voices making a difference in our world today.
