This is your first glimpse of Celebrity Edge – a ship that brings you closer to the sea than ever and even gives you x-ray vision.
Celebrity Cruises is currently building a futuristic cruise liner they believe will change the cruising experience forever. And we were at their big reveal at their new Innovation Lab in Miami.
This moving bar is your gateway to adventure
The Celebrity Edge ‘Magic Carpet’ started with a simple problem. In many ports, the ship is too large to moor by the dock. Cruise guests have to take small boats from the ship to shore.
But getting onto those boats meant an inelegant trip down a narrow gangplank.
So Celebrity Cruises wanted to make that experience amazing.
The Magic Carpet – complete with its bar – can be moved down the side of the ship to the waterline. And once there, it becomes a stunning floating harbor from where to take a tender boat off to your adventure.
Dinner on the Edge
The Magic Carpet can also be placed at deck five for alfresco dining linked to one of Celebrity Edge’s gourmet restaurants.
And it can float right to the summit of the ship, on deck 16. There 90 guests will be able to have ‘dinner on the edge’ – a restaurant with a view unlike any other you’ll have experienced.
Bigger cabins, taking you right to the water’s edge
Not long ago, you were lucky to get a porthole in your cabin. Now modern staterooms give you a veranda.
But Celebrity Edge takes it a whole lot further.
The designers asked guests what they wanted from their rooms. They were told more space, bigger bathrooms, a bigger bed, more storage and a closer connection to the sea.
So the naval architects have moved the ship’s steel skeleton into the center of the vessel, creating roomier staterooms.
And they’ve merged the stateroom with their verandas, creating more indoor and outdoor space.
Open the enormous window, you’ve got a veranda, flooding your living area with space and light. Close it and you have a bigger stateroom with more space for storage, a bigger restroom and a king-sized bed.
One day all ships will be like this. Don’t believe it? Just compare the photo of this stateroom with a picture of any other standard cabin you’ll find online.
The first thing guests want to do when they arrive onboard, is explore the ship. But obviously not every part of the ship is open to the public.
So Celebrity Cruises has found a way to give you x-ray vision.
There will be a sign on the public side of the wall and video cameras on the other side. Turn on the app on your phone, hold it up to the relevant area, and you’ll be able to see the captain at work on the bridge or peer into the engine room.
Doors that know you’re coming
And the latest tech is coming to all areas of the ship, often using a new Celebrity Cruises app.
Order a drink via your phone anywhere on deck, and your waiter will be able to find you and bring it to you, even if you move.
Then try heading back to your room. If your phone is in your pocket, the door will be able to detect it is you and will unlock for you when you are close. No more need for card keys.
And once in your stateroom, you’ll be able to use the app to turn down the lights, change the temperature or raise the blinds from your bed.
The best way ever to wake up
When you are in deep, dreaming sleep, and you wake up suddenly, you feel groggy. When you are in light sleep and you wake up, you feel refreshed.
So Celebrity has found a way to make sure you get out of the right side of the bed every day of your holiday. As an alternative to an alarm, you can set a program that sounds a tone and lighting sequence to gently lift you from REM sleep.
A floating rooftop garden
The new Rooftop Garden is so lush with plants that a resident horticulturist will give it daily attention.
You may find a guitarist strumming away in one of the trees or games and activities to join in. And at night, you can enjoy a meal as you watch a movie on the outdoor cinema screen.
Bringing the style of a luxury apartment
This is the first entirely new ship design Celebrity Cruises has created in a decade.
So they wanted to ensure world-class design. Renowned interior designer Kelly Hoppen MBE and visionary architect Tom Wright have come together to give every inch of the ship a sense of style and luxury.
They have flooded the interiors with light and finished them with contemporary luxuries. The result brings luxurious loft-style apartment spaces to the sea.
And they designed the ship in a new way. By using the latest 3D technology, the Celebrity Cruises innovators can explore the ship in a 3D room in their new Innovation Lab. That way they ensure their ideas work in practice.
Suites on two levels
Six new split-level Edge Villas will be the first suites that Celebrity has built that span across two decks.
The suites will boast two bedrooms, two bathrooms, and a private plunge pool. And you’ll feel closer to the sea and the amazing ports you visit thanks to the views from double height windows.
Don’t worry about running up and down the stairs to fetch things, you’re personal butler will be there for that.
You get a better view than the captain
Celebrity Edge also boasts two suites above the ship’s bridge.
With two bedrooms, two bathrooms, a dining room and living room, the Iconic Suites are almost 2,600 sq ft. The veranda alone is an enormous 700 sq ft.
In fact, the panoramic view is better than the captain gets one level down. You’ll just have to accept the promotion to admiral.
Hear from gay design ambassador Nate Berkus
Chicago-based designer Nate Berkus serves as Celebrity Edge’s design ambassador.
Here he gives you a tour of the new ship.
You can expect to find Berkus and his handsome husband Jeremiah Brent on board soon.
Get on board Celebrity Edge
Celebrity Edge is still being built in a French dockyard. But it will launch in December 2018. And you can already book Caribbean cruises starting from 16 December and departing from Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
Three sister ships will launch in 2020, 2021 and 2022.
